Sol Ruca has a unique set of footwear for her matches in hightop Vans, and she recently explained how that came about. Ruca eschews traditional wrestling boots and instead wears the branded sneakers to the ring, something she spoke about in an interview with KRON 4’s The Finish.
Ruca noted that it was a choice she made early on to keep her character cohesive and how, growing up wearing them, it was a comfortable choice for doing what she does in the ring. You can see the highlights below:
On Wearing Vans For Her Matches:
“I think with my character, I kind of wanted everything that I wear, everything that I do be kind of cohesive with that. So I mean, my character is pretty much who I am in real life. I was born and raised in Southern California, obviously spent some time in Hawaii as well. And I have this like surfer/skater kind of gimmick and kind of persona.
“I grew up wearing Vans. I grew up wearing the the lowtop checkered Vans, I have pictures of me as like a little teeny, tiny little baby wearing them. And I actually did try, I think in my first ever show in front of a crowd. It was like a live event and I tried wearing slip-on bands, and it was a terrible idea because they were obviously slipping off every five seconds. So that’s kind of why I transitioned into the hightop Vans.”
On Feeling Comfortable In Them:
“But yeah, I just kind of wanted to be cohesive and it is just a shoe that I’m so comfortable in. I mean, I grew up doing gymnastics where I was barefoot, and so being able to perform in shoes was a little bit weird for me. Especially you know, doing flips and bouncing off the ropes just felt a little weird, but I think the Vans was an easy choice. It felt comfortable and it was — you know, they’re flat, they’re they’re basically barefoot. So that’s kind of where that came from.”
