Comment: Volkanovski pulled the decision with scores of 49-46, 50-45 and 50-44. The only round he lost was round 5 on one judge’s scorecard. However, the closest he came to losing was in the third round when Ortega locked in a guillotine choke and then a triangle choke. The champion’s stamina was never in question as he bounced around the cage for the entire fight and picked Ortega apart. Decisively the best featherweight in the world, there are no clear top contenders right now, which means the next opponent for Volkanovski is wide open for someone to earn with impressive performances in the months ahead.

Comment: Over the past three years, Ortega is 1-2 in three fights with two losses coming in championship bouts. He has been a step behind then-champion Holloway and the reigning champ Volkanovski. Since coming to the UFC in 2014, he has been nearly perfect in non-title fights (the no contest followed a submission win due to a banned substance). He’s only approaching 32-years-old in less than five months and there is no reason to disbelieve he has plenty of room to improve.
