Blumhouse Sets Karyn Kusama to Direct New Dracula Film
Fresh off its critical and commerical success with The Invisible Man, Blumhouse is moving on a new take on Dracula and has set Karyn Kusama to direct. THR reports that Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation) will direct from a script by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who co-wrote Kusama’s The Invitation.
As of now, the film is not at Universal despite the studio and Blumhouse’s striking gold with Invisible Woman thanks to the fact that Dracula is a public domain story, so it could conceivably be set up at another studio although that is said to be unlikely.
The vampire novel has of course been made into film multiple times including the 1931 Universal classic, F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu (which was unauthorized, but directly based on the story), the Hammer Films Dracula, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 film and, most recently, Universal’s 2014 effort Dracula Untold.
Details on the plot for this latest remake are not yet known, including how closely it will follow the Stoker novel.
