Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves took the top spot at the box office this weekend, powering past John Wick: Chapter 4. The D&D movie grossed $38.5 million in its opening weekend to claim #1, opening at the high end of its $35 million to $40 million expectations coming into the weekend. That’s a good start for the film, which charted above this month’s Shazam: Fury of the Gods ($30.1 million) and just a little below 2022’s Uncharted ($44 million).

Hasbro has wanted to get D&D into theaters for quite some time but had a rough road there. Notably, fans still have the bad taste of the 2000 Dungeons & Dragons movie in their mouths, and it was infamously a bomb on every level. Honor Among Thieves was able to ride its way to success based on strong critical buzz that kept its opening weekend at the upper end of expectations, scoring a 91% aggregated score on Rotten Tomatoes.

More crucially to Paramount and Hasbro, the film is a hit with fans as well. The film has a stellar A-CinemaScore and a 93% audience rating on RT, which led to a pretty strong hold throughout the weekend and bodes well for its potential week-to-week holds. This will be essential for the film, which was spendy at $150 million. D&D has some big competition coming up, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie targeting its family audiences next weekend. As it stands though, the film should be able to at least make its way to $120 million domestically. It has added $33 million overseas for a $71.5 million total, and it will need to continue to hold strong in both aspects for it to reach hit status.

John Wick: Chapter 4 fell to the #2 spot in its second weekend with $28.2 million. The fourth entry in the action franchise was down an expected 62% from its opening weekend numbers. The film has now totaled $122.8 million domestically and $244.9 million worldwide, a hit against its $75 million budget. It’s still looking to top $175 million domestically without too much trouble.

Angel Studios scored a #3 spot with its first theatrical offering, His Only Son. The Biblical drama grossed $5.5 million, making it the latest faith-based film to serve as counter-programming. The indie film wasn’t heavily reviewed nor did have a lot of publicity around it, being scheduled just two weeks ago. But faith-based films have crowds just as loyal as Marvel blockbusters, and they came out in force to support this depiction of Abraham’s story.

While the film only has a smattering of reviews, the core audience loved it – as is often the case with this genre. The film scored an A CinemaScore and has a 95% audience score on RT. There’s no word on how much the film cost, but Angel Studios notes that the P&A was crowd-funded, which is a first. His Only Son is somewhat more likely to fade quickly than not; Biblical epics usually average less than a 3.0 multiple. But considering the budget wasn’t likely high and the P&A is covered, a $13 million to $15 million domestic final seems to be a solid result for them.

Scream VI was down a solid 36% in its fourth weekend, totaling $5.3 million. The slasher sequel is now up to $98.2 million domestically and $147.6 million worldwide, putting it in striking distance of the franchise’s domestic record ($103 million for the 1996 origina). Scream VI is targeting around $110 million domestically and is a hit against a $35 million budget.

Creed III was off 39% in its fifth weekend, bringing in $5 million. The Michael B. Jordan-directed film now has $148.6 million domestically and $258.6 million worldwide, looking at a likely $160 million domestic against a $75 million production budget plus marketing.

Shazam: Fury Of the Gods continues to rapidly fade away, down 49% in its third weekend with $4.6 million. The DC sequel has just $53.5 million domestically and $119.5 million worldwide, bad numbers against its $125 million budget. The film still seems unlikely to get above $70 million domestically and is a money loser for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC.

Opening at #7 was the drama A Thousand And One. The Focus Features production turned up $1.8 million, an okay start for a film that didn’t have much mainstream awareness around it. The Teyana Taylor-led film has been a hit with critics (96% RT average) and those who have seen it (84% RT audience score), but it’s also very much an under the radar kind of film. Where it goes from here depends on whether Focus plans on expanding its theater count, but it won’t get above $8 million or so in theaters and will find life on digital.

65 sunk 51% in its fourth weekend with $1.6 million. The sci-fi action film has managed $30.6 million domestically and $54.8 million worldwide, not where it needs to be against a $45 million budget. It should still end its run with around $36 million or so domestically.

Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania was down 49% in its seventh weekend with $1.2 million. The MCU film has totaled $212 million domestically and $471.8 million worldwide, with a $220 million likely domestic total. The budget was $200 million.

Jesus Revolution closed out the top 10 with $1 million. The drama has now grossed $50.9 million against a $15 million budget, making it a solid money maker, and should end its run around $53 million domestically.

Next weekend will see a new #1 as The Super Mario Bros. Movie charges in, aiming at around $90 million-plus. Also opening is the Nike drama Air, which is targeting about $10 million or so.
