Forsaken Mandalorian and the Drunken Jedi Master, a new Star Wars short fan film from writer/director Anthony Ferraro (he also acts in the short), is a well-made fan movie that manages to evoke the “real” Star Wars movies and TV shows. In fact, if you didn’t know ahead of time that it was just a fan film, odds are good that you would think you were watching a real deal Star Wars/Lucasfilm production. Featuring top notch production values, costuming, and a balls-to-the-wall performance by Ferraro, it’s the kind of fan made short that you wish was more than just a fan short film. You wish it was a feature length fan film.

Forsaken Mandalorian and the Drunken Jedi Master stars Jonathan Castile as the Forsaken Mandalorian, who is on the hunt for a Hutt courier named Vag’duban (Clint Carney). Vag’duban has something that the Forsaken Mandalorian needs to complete a specific mission. After finally tracking Vag’duban down, the Forsaken Mandalorian learns of the presence of Rahel Boskuwi (Ferraro), a Jedi master that seems to spend most of his time getting drunk off his ass. The Forsaken Mandalorian will need to do what he can to get Boskuwi to sober up a bit. Just like his meeting with Vag’duban, the Forsaken Mandalorian will need Boskuwi to complete his mission. Will it happen? Will the Forsaken Mandalorian manage to convince the Drunken Jedi Master to, in essence, join the fight?

The first thing you’ll notice about Forsaken Mandalorian is just how damn good it looks. As I said earlier, it looks like something that would come directly from Lucasfilm and Disney. From the costuming to the makeup (Clint Carney’s Vag’duban alien makeup is absolutely fantastic looking) to the rest of the short’s special effects, the whole thing looks like it cost way more than it likely actually did. The Mandalorian speeder sequence is the only “iffy” special effect in the short, but that’s only in comparison to everything else we see (and the speeder effect looks better than most big budget special effects you see in today’s big hooha movies). The short’s light saber effects are excellent looking, too.

The performances are all spot on. Jonathan Castile gives the Forsaken Mandalorian the kind of badass aura you expect to see with someone wearing Mandalorian armor of some sort. I mean, anyone can wear the armor, sure, and look cool, but if you don’t know how to position yourself, walk in the armor or, heck, stand correctly with the stuff on, you could end up looking like just some guy wearing a costume. Castile does all of the right things and makes the Forsaken Mandalorian the badass you want him to be.

Clint Carney disappears behind the makeup as Vag’duban and makes the blue skinned Hutt courier one of the sleaziest aliens you’ll see in any sort of sci-fi entertainment. I wonder if all aliens like Vag’duban are, well, like Vag’duban.

And Anthony Ferraro is a riot as the drunken Jedi master Rahel Boskuwi. Doing a sort of inebriated Nick Frost, Ferraro makes Boskuwi the kind of Jedi you want to see more of in the Star Wars universe: a fighting badass, sure, but maybe he doesn’t have it all together all of the time when he isn’t wielding a lightsaber. The last time we saw a Jedi master with emotional issues it didn’t work out all that well, yes, but it was still interesting to watch. It doesn’t always have to end with the reorganization of the galaxy and evil incarnate.

At the moment, there’s no indication that Forsaken Mandalorian and the Drunken Jedi Master is the first in a fan film series or a sort of preview of a possible feature length movie, but I’d imagine that if the short gets enough views and is deemed by successful that we will see more of the Forsaken Mandalorian and Rahel Boskuwi. There’s definitely more story to be told, and hopefully we get it at some point in the future.

See Forsaken Mandalorian and the Drunken Jedi Master. It’s available now on the Create Sci Fi YouTube channel (check out that page here. It’s a terrific Star Wars short fan film, and something that Star Wars fans will dig immensely. I loved it. See it, see it, see it.
