Henry Cavill Will Star in Live-Action Voltron for Amazon MGM Studios
Henry Cavill, best known for his roles as DC’s Superman and Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, has another big franchise role lined up. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the actor has signed to star in a live-action feature film adaptation of Voltron for Amazon MGM Sudios.
Cavill is set to star in the feature for filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber. He’ll be joined by newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye, who reportedly impressed the studio and filmmaker with his recent work as Tom Holland’s understudy at the West End.
Plot details for the feature are unknown, along with who Cavill and Quinn-Toye are set to play. Thurber directs from a script he co-wrote with Ellen Shanman. Thurber and Hobie Films’ David Hoberman are producing the project along with Hidden Pictuers’ Todd Lieberman and World Events Productions’ Bob Koplar.
Voltron originated as a sci-fi mecha anime series in Japan called Beast King GoLion. The series was edited, dubbed into English, and re-versioned in the United States as Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which debuted in syndication in 1984. The series centers on a group of five young pilots who command giant robot lions, who when they combine, form the giant robot Voltron. Together, they protect the galaxy from Emperor Zarkon and his son Prince Lothor.
Henry Cavill is also set to re-team with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare director Guy Ritchie for the upcoming action-thriller, The The Grey, which arrives in theaters in January 2025. Additionally, he’s expected to begin working on an upcoming theatrical reboot of the Highlander franchise next year. Another project he has in the works with Amazon MGM Studios is a new adaptation of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000, based on the popular tabletop game series.
Voltron looks to be the latest popular animated series and toy franchise from the 1980s as a big-screen theatrical reboot. The studio is currently gearing up a new live-action version of Masters of the Universe, from director Travis Knight, which will arrive in theaters on June 5, 2026.
