Leigh Whannell is set to direct Universal’s remake of The Invisible Man. Variety reports that Whannell (Insidious: The Last Key) will helm the film, which will no longer star Johnny Depp and is not connected to Universal’s failed “Dark Universe” cinematic universe anymore.

Blumhouse Productions will produce the film, as well as Universal’s other monsters remakes. The strategy will now be to bring the classic monsters to films in collaboration with creative directors who can offer a distinct perspective on the stories. The remakes will be “rooted in horror, with no restrictions on budget, tone, or rating,” according to the report.

Peter Cramer, president of production at Universal, said: “Throughout cinematic history, Universal’s classic monsters have been reinvented through the prism of each new filmmaker who brought these characters to life. We are excited to take a more individualized approach for their return to screen, shepherded by creators who have stories they are passionate to tell with them.”
