Mank Leads 93rd Annual Academy Award Nominations With 10
The nominations are in for the 93rd annual Academy Awards, with David Fincher’s Mank leading the way in total nods. The Fincher-directed biographical drama earned 10 nominations as was announced on Monday morning to lead the way, beating out six films which all earned six nominations. Mank was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (Fincher), Best Actor (Gary Oldman), Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried), Best Original Score (Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross), Best Sound, Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design.
Tied for second with most nominees were a host of films in The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. All of those films joined Mank in the Best Picture Race, as did Promising Young Woman which earned five nominations.
Notable among the other nominees, 2021 marks the first year that two women were nominated for Best Director in Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland>). Additionally, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross find themselves in self-competition as they were both nominated not only for Mank, but also Soul alongside Jon Batiste. Chadwick Boseman is a post-mortem nominee, being nominated for Best Actor for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman won the Golden Globe for that performance.
