Mary Poppins Returns Grosses $4.8 Million for Opening Day
Variety reports that Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns had a strong start at the box office this week, bringing in $4.8 million on its opening day of release. The film opened in 3,900 theaters.
The film stars Emily Blunt in the titular role for the new Disney sequel. The film is currently projected to make $55 million from Wednesday to Sunday. Additionally, it’s estimated to finish with about $75 million at the domestic market by Christmas Day. This will be the first time since 2014 that there hasn’t been a Star Wars film to carry the Christmas box office season.
The original film was released in theaters 54 years ago, starring Julie Andrews. Blunt takes over the role of Mary Poppins in the sequel alongside Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Mary’s cousin Topsy (Meryl Streep), and Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw as the adult Banks children. Dick Van Dyke, who portrayed Bert in the original film, has a cameo as well.
The sequel is now in theaters and is directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago), with new music by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Friday sees the release of Aquaman, Bumblebee, Welcome to Marwen, and The Second Act.
