Report by Brad Jennette, EXCLUSIVELY for www.411wrestling.com

The video rolls, the pyro hits and we are TAPED FROM DETROIT … it’s WWE Smackdown for August 21, 2003

We kick off Smackdown with Kurt Angle coming to the ring. He gets a really nice face pop by the way. He wants to fight Brock Lesnar tonight. He won’t leave the ring until he gets his wish. Enter Vince McMahon and Brock Lesnar. Vince says Angle won’t be fighting Brock tonight. Angle says he will fight Brock and Vince tonight. Vince says it isn’t about what Angle wants, what the fans want, its about what he wants. Vince puts Angle in a Summerslam warm-up match tonight against the Big Show. Show comes out but Angle jumps him. Angle gets pulled off by various security

Backstage, Big Show wants the match with Angle changed to a falls count anywhere street fight. Vince agrees.

Rey Mysterio vs Matt Hardy
This was a really solid cruiserweight match but not quite as good as the title switch they did a few months back. Solid back and forth action that saw Rey hit the 619 and West Coast Pop after Zach Gowen hopped to the ring and hit Matt in the back with his cane. I really hope they don’t make Matt job to Zach.
Winner: Rey Mysterio

Backstage, Vince & Brock are chatting. Brock says he needs a warm-up match too. Vince makes it Lesnar vs Gowen tonight. Brock promises to break Zach’s good leg.

They video recap last week’s stellar main event, Stephanie McMahon vs A-Train

Ringside, Michael Cole leaves the announcer table and walks over and interviews Zach Gowen’s mom. She isn’t thrilled about seeing her baby against the monster known as Brock Lesnar.

Basham Brothers vs Billy Gunn & Jamie Noble
This was pretty standard tag stuff. Billy played Morton for a little bit and but then made the hot tag to Noble who cleaned house. I really thought the finish was cool. Danny Basham (or was it Doug?) got knocked out, but Jamie had to attend to Torrie and Nidia (who had been attacked by Shaniqua). Billy got in to make the cover but the healthy Basham had switched places with the injured brother and made the quick and surprising pin.
Winners: Basham Brothers

They video recap last week’s severe beatdown on Spanky by Brock Lesnar.

Brock Lesnar vs Zach Gowen
Pre-match, Brock tries to make nice with Zach mom, but Zach takes offense and hits Brock with his prosthetic leg. Brock shakes it off and beats Zach like a dog who just bit a kid. Zach eats a double powerbomb and then a big chairshot to the head that draws the DQ. Brock F5’s Zach into the post after the match. Then, just to be an even bigger dick, Brock knocks Zach off the stretcher he was placed on after the match. Brock makes his tribal ritual markings of Zach’s blood on his chest. I really like the way they are letting Brock just maul these little guys.
Winner by DQ: Zach Gowen

John Cena comes out and cuts an anti-Detroit rap. He calls rhymes blackout with crackhouse. Crowd chants “you suck” so Cena says they swallow.

John Cena & A-Train vs Undertaker & Orlando Jordan
This was all Undertaker, all the time here. I will give the old guy credit, he is at least he is trying out there. Finish saw Taker have Cena up in the air for the Last Ride, but A-Train sneak up behind Taker and hit him in the back with Cena’a lock and chain. Cena then fell on top of the collapsed Taker and got the pin. Jordan didn’t add much to this one.
Winners: John Cena & A-Train

Backstage, Sable flirts with A-Train as a token of her gratitude for taking out Stephanie last week.

Eddie Guerrero & Rhyno vs Tajiri & Chris Benoit
Our favorite heel and horned friend came out in a super bouncer low-rider. Benoit and Tajiri just walked like idiots. I really think the US title match is going to be good as long as it gets a good amount of time. All four of these guys seem to work well together. Finish saw Benoit have Rhyno in position for a german, but Tajiri miss a superkick intended for Rhyno. Of course it hit Benoit and Rhyno was able to gore Tajiri for the pin. In the best spot of the night, Eddie nails Benoit with the title belt. He also nails Rhyno with the title belt. He slams Tajiri with it too for good measure. Eddie better walk out with the title.
Winners: Eddie Guererro & Rhyno

Falls count anywhere street fight: Kurt Angle vs The Big Show
Angle and Brock seem to be the only 2 guys who can lower their speed to Show’s level and still have a fun match to watch. This was a fun brawl around the ring side area that had some fun spots. Angle bulldogged Show onto the stairs, legdropped a chair onto his face and finally Angle Slammed him through a table to end it. Good match to end the show as Angle once against adapted and proved his godliness. Brock comes down the ramp and we get the final stare down before the PPV.
Winner: Kurt Angle

End of Show.
