Bruce Prichard says that it’s been fun and challenging to do John Cena’s retirement run, but also “kind of sad” at the same time. Cena competes in his last match at Saturday Night’s Main Event, challenging Gunther. The match puts an end to Cena’s celebrated in-ring career.
Prichard appeared on BT & Sal for WFAN and was asked about Cena’s last run and more. You can see some highlights below:
On Cena’s Retirement Run Being Both Challenging & Fun:
“All the above. And I got to tell you, it’s also been it’s been kind of sad, too. Because the the last match that he had in San Diego, he wrestled Dominik Mysterio [at] Survivor Series. And I hugged him after the match, and I said, ‘You know what? I’m sad. I’m sad that we are only going to do this one more time.’
“And he looked at me and said, ‘Bruce, I’ve only got one more time left in me.’ So, bless his heart, man. It’s been a absolute blast doing it. And I’m just sad that it’s coming to an end.”
On the Difference In Durability Between His Era and the Current Day:
“I often say that if the business had been what it is today then, that I don’t think I ever would have trained to get into it. I was an athlete. I wasn’t a world-class athlete like the talent that comes through now, that are just ungodly phenomenons that can do anything.
“So the conditioning is different, the athleticism is different. They’re just much more in tune with their body. They don’t go out and drink every night. They’re not doing all kinds of drugs. They take care of themselves. We were out every night, partying every night. But we also did it every night. We got the hell out of us every single night, day in and day out. Twice on Saturday, twice on Sunday.”
