CHIKARA Review: Three-Fisted Tales

Philadelphia, PA – 11.22.2009

CHIKARA returns to Philadelphia to wrap up Season 8 with “Three-Fisted Tales”. Many loose ends will be tired up after tonight. The feud between Incoherence and The Order come to ahead when Hallowicked & Frightmare take on Ultramantis Black and former Incoherence member Delirious. Each team has two points, meaning the winning team gets a future tag team title match. Eddie Kingston and Claudio Castagnoli meet one more time, with the winner having to get on the microphone and tell the other man that they respect them. In our main event, for the fourth time in 2009, the Osirian Portal and the Colony meet. The Campeonatos de Parejas are on the line, but this time, The Colony is defending and The Osirian Portal are challenging.

Commentary is provided by Louden Noxious, Bryce Remsburg, Leonard F. Chikarason, Ultramantis Black, Jimmy Olsen, and Eddie Kingston.

The Colony (Green Ant & Carpenter Ant) and The Throwbacks (Dasher Hatfield & Sugar Dunkerton) vs. The UnStable (Vin Gerard, STIGMA, & Colin Delaney) and Brodie Lee

After a series of tags, we finally start things off with Brodie and Sugar. Brodie face plams Sugar down and then again with a pair of shoulder tackles. Sugar drinks some Gatorade and budges Brodie with a shoulder tackle. Sugar dropkicks Brodie’s leg out and then lands another shoulder block. Sugar looks to slam dunk a ball on Brodie, and gets rejected! Brodie comes out of the corner with a rolling clothesline sending Sugar to the floor. STIGMA and Carpenter Ant tag in. STIGMA brings Carpenter to the corner and chops him, then does it again. Carpenter grabs a headlock. STIGMA tries to throw Carpenter Ant and fails. STIGMA punches Carpenter in the mid-section, and Carpenter brings STIGMA to the mat with a headlock takeover. STIGMA puts a headscissors on Carpenter. Carpenter escapes and clasps the side headlock back on. STIGMA elbows Carpenter in the side, sends him off the ropes, and STIGMA doesn’t budge with Carpenter’s shoulder blocks. Carpenter superkicks STIGMA, and STIGMA comes back with strikes. Carpenter hops over STIGMA out of the corner and dropkicks STIGMA before sending him to the floor with a spinwheel kick. Carpenter follows with a pescado. Vin and Green Ant come in the ring. Colin from the outside trips Green Ant and brings him to the floor. Green Ant fights him off and comes in with a sunset flip. Vin escapes and Green Ant takes Vin Gerard down with an armdrag, hip toss, and a dropkick. Vin goes to the floor. Dasher and Colin tag in. Dasher gets a polish swing to the gut. Dasher blocks a hip toss, runs up the ropes, and takes Colin down with an armdrag. Dasher dropkicks Colin’s legs out. Colin evades a baseball slide and come back with his seated clothesline. Colin goes up top and gets crotched by Dasher. Dasher puts Colin the Tree of Woe. Vin blocks Dasher from sliding into Colin’s face. A mock baseball game gets set up in the ring. Brodie bases Dasher in the face, and Vin mockingly runs the ring and takes Dasher to the floor. The Colony both take down Brodie with flying double forearms. STIGMA and Colin maintain control against both Green Ant and Dasher. Dasher gets isolated from his team and bullied by the Rudos. Dahser looks for the Grand Slam on Colin, but Colin blocks. Dasher superkicks Colin to the floor and follows with a pescado. Carpenter comes in and gets taken down by STIGMA. Vin and Sugar each land a crossbody on each other and roll to the floor. Green Ant comes in and eats Brodie’s big boot for the pin in 11:14. A nice opening match, and I’m happy they made the UnStable look somewhat important here because they’ve been inconsequential for the entire year. Brodie would be a cool addition to the crew if he and Kingston don’t team in 2010. **1/4

Helios vs. Yujiro Kushida

Kushida gets a waistlock on Helios which he turns into a wristlock. Kushida drops to the mat and kicks Helios in the face. Helios then gets a waistlock and takes Kushida down. Kushida reverses but gets kicked in his face as payback. They lock fingers and Kushida gets a shoulder lock. Helios backflips into a wrist lock. Kushida drops to a knee and turns into a headlock. Helios rolls Kushida into a pin for two. Kushida holds onto the headlock, and Helios turns into an armlock. Kushida drop toe holds Helios right back into the headlock. Kushida gets tossed to the ropes but comes back with a shoulder block takedown to Helios. Helios gets a step-up frankensteiner and Kushida backflips through. Both men go at it with fast paced back and forth moves leading to a stalemate. Kushida looks for a handshake, and Kushida boots Helios in the stomach. Kushida locks for the Tranatula in the corner. Kushida blocks an O’Conner Roll from Helios. Helios runs up the ropes and corkscrews into an armdrag. Helios tosses Kushida to the rope. Kushida kicks and backflips to the apron. Kushida kicks Helios right in the face then comes off the top rope with a chop to Helios. Kushida gives Helios another off the top. Helios tries a third and gets cut off. Kushida catches Helios off the ropes with a double overhand chop to Helios for two. Kushida stomps Helios and slams him. Kushida comes out of the corner with a falling thrust to his throat. Kushida applies a chinlock and pins Helios for two. Kushida turns into an armbar stretch. Kushida cranks the neck of Helios with his neck, then hits a standing moonsault for two. Helios comes back, slamming the back of Kushida’s head into the mat. Kushida and Helios trade forearms. Helios flips up into a headscissors takedown then an alita. Helios Tiger Walks up Kushida, and misses the cannonball senton. Kushida drops Helios on his head with a cradle piledriver, and Helios manages to kick out. Kushida comes off the ropes with the backhand springboard elbow. Helios blocks a kick to the head and picks up Kushida. Kushida chokes Helios with his belt to escape. Kushida delivers two hard kicks to Helios’ head, places the Japanese flag on him, and pins him for two as Helios gets his foot on the bottom rope. Helios comes back with a superkick. Helios goes up top and lands the 630 splash for the pin in 10:46. Another awesome high-flying match that Kushida produces in his debut weekend for the company. Kushida is one of the better fly-ins CHIKARA has had this year, and hopefully the bring him back and don’t knock his HUSTLE (that’s for you, Ari). ***

Player Uno vs. Tim Donst

Donst brings out Hydra’s muscle suit that he took from him last night. Donst and Uno trade wristlocks. Uno gets a headscissors which Donst turns into a sitting stretch plum. Uno gets to his feet and chops Donst. Donst and Uno run into each other with shoulder blocks. Uno takes Donst down with a leg lariat and a chop. Donst trips Uno and brings his leg over the ring post. Donst slams Uno’s leg against the post. Donst slams Uno with a gut-wrench suplex for two. Uno sends Donst to the corner. Donst sends Uno to the apron, then brings him back in with a belly-to-belly suplex for two. Donst wrenches back on Uno’s left arm. Uno punches Donst in the face, and Donst grabs Uno’s head slamming it into the mat. Donst looks for the Hydralock, which Uno turns into the arm capture stunner. Uno lands a series of clotheslines. Donst misses a dive in the corner. Uno drops Donst with an arm-capture reverse stunner. Donst rolls Uno up for two. Uno blocks a German and brings Donst to the corner. Uno runs to the corner and eats an elbow. Uno lands a neckbreaker off the second rope on Donst. Uno locks on the Joystick and Donst tapes out in 6:17. This was average and short, but I have a feeling considering where Donst is by the end of the night and how Uno was in his promo that this match will lead to something of importance. *

Incoherence (Hallowicked & Frightmare) vs. The Order of the Neo-Solar Temple (Ultramantis Black & Delirious)

The winning team will get a future shot at the Campeonatos de Parejas, and the losing team drops back to zero points. Delirious and Hallowicked start with a stare off. Mantis yells commands to Delirious, and Delirious beats on Frightmare. Wicked comes in and asks Delirious what he’s up to. Mantis drags Hallowicked to the floor and slams him into the guardrail. Delirious lands a chop on Frightmare and sends him to the ropes. Frightmare comes back with a step-up Frankensteiner. Delirious sends Frightmare to the floor. Wicked and Delirious stare off again. Wicked is trying to get through to him, but Delirious takes Wicked down with a neck breaker. Wicked fights back and knocks Delirious out to the floor with a Big Boot. Mantis hops in and rakes the eyes of Wicked. Wicked gets thrown to the floor. Frightmare comes in and hits a nice Crucifix bomb on Mantis for two. Wicked tags back in and chops Mantis. Mantis knees Wicked and locks in a full nelson. Delirious comes in and takes a boot from Wicked. Delirious almost forearms Mantis, but stops in time. Wicked clotheslines Delirious but then gets sent to the floor. Frightmare dives in, and Delirious takes him down with a side suplex. Mantis tags in. Incoherence double teams Mantis. Frightmare looks for a cover, but Delirious runs in and nails Frightmare with the Panic Attack. Mantis goes to work on Frightmare, keeping him from tagging in Hallowicked. Frightmare comes back with a clothesline to Delirious after minutes of abuse. Frightmare hits a tope to Delirious on the floor, tagging in Wicked and Mantis. Wicked lands a Rydeen Bomb on Mantis for the two count. Hallowicked chops Mantis. Mantis throws Wicked to the ropes. Delirious grabs his legs. Mantis hits a full nelson slam on Wicked for two. Delirious tags in and slaps Hallowicked. Wicked fires up and comes back with hard forearms. Wicked picks up Delirious. Delirious fights out, but eats a forearm for Wicked. Delirious blocks the Graveyard Smash, and Wicked blocks the Praying Mantis Bomb. Hallowicked hits a great step-up Enzugiri on Delirious in the corner, but Delirious comes back with a German suplex. Delirious hits the Shadows Over Hell and Hallowicked kicks out at 1! Delirious and Wicked trade strikes on their feet. Wicked rocks Delirious with the Yakuza Kick, and then another when Mantis breaks up the pinfall. Mantis lands the Mongolian chops on Wicked. Wicked turns a slam attempt into the Graveyard Smash attempt. Mantis and Wicked trade shots. Wicked hits the Go Too Sleepy Hollow and Frightmare follows with the Kneecolepsy. Delirious breaks up the pin and drops Frightmare a hard Praying Mantis Bomb! Mantis gets the pin on him for the victory in 10:51 and their third point. The Order receive a future shot for the Campeonatos de Parejas. This was a great match, and a fine way to end the feud (if this is indeed the end). Some of these men hit harder than I’ve ever seen them hit and put on quite the tag bout. I was very impressed. ***1/4

This bout was originally supposed to be a trios match, but due to the severity of Jigsaw and Gran Akuma’s singles bout from the night prior, this has now been changed to a regular ol’ tag team contest.

The Masters of a Thousand Holds (Mike Quackenbush & Jorge “Skayde” Rivera) vs. F.I.S.T. (Icarus & Chuck Taylor)

Quack starts with Chuck. Quack takes Chuck over in a wrist lock and sends him to the floor with a springboard armdrag. Quack teases a dive before tagging in Skayde. Icarus comes in and gets tripped by Skayde. Skayde and Icarus go back and forth with Skayde turning a springboard from Icarus into an X-Factor. Icarus and Skyade keep the fast pace with Skayde sending Icarus to the floor with a dropkick. Chuck teases coming in to distract Skayde. Icarus dropkicks Skayde from behind, giving F.I.S.T. the chance to isolate Skyade from Quackenbush. Skayde turns a hip toss from Chuck into a hip toss of his own, sending Chuck to the floor. Quack comes in with a series of moves on Icarus for two. Chuck comes back and trades shots with Quack. Quack goes over Chuck’s back, dropkicks him to the ropes, Skayde dropkicks Chuck in the head, and Quack pins him for two. Chuck sends Quack to the floor with the Sole Food. Icarus and Chuck take out both of Skayde’s knees with double dropkicks. Icarus continues to work on Skayde’s knees. F.I.S.T again isolate Skayde keeping the focus on his legs. Skayde makes a comeback and pins Chuck with the Skayde Especial for two. Skayde pops up Icarus, and Quack catches him with a superkick for two. The Masters double team Icarus with Chuck breaking up the pin. Chuck sends Quack to the ropes. Quack and Skayde attack Chuck in the corner. Quack comes off the top with a hurricanrana on Chuck. Skayde turns Chuck over into a Cross Crab/ankle lock variation. Icarus comes in and breaks the hold. Quack takes Chuck over with a full nelson face buster for two. Skayde comes with a springboard headscissors takedown. Icarus hip tosses Skayde. Quack gets popped up and with Skayde’s help take both Icarus and Chuck down. Skayde and Quack apply pendulums to Chuck and Icarus respectively. They roll into pins for two. Chuck and Skayde remain in the ring. Skayde lands a backbreaker and a stunner. Skayde takes over Chuck for a pin and Chuck reverses for two. Skayde slams Chuck face first on the mat for another two. Chuck blocks a hip toss, pulls Skayde down, and applies the Cross Crab for the submission in 11:43. Another great tag team match that the crowd got into. It worked to keep Akuma and Jigsaw out of the match to justify the brutality of their fight from the previous night. And now F.I.S.T. has a point and the non-regular team does not; makes sense to me. ***

Young Lions Cup
Player Dos vs. Lince Dorado

Lince earned this match by pinning Dos in the Cibernetico last month. Can he do it again tonight in singles competition? Both men lock knuckles and look for the power advantage. After no man gets the advantage, they go back and forth with again neither man getting the advantage. They go back and forth again, with Dos taking Lince over in a headscissors. Dos sends Lince to the apron and springboard dropkicks Lince off the apron to the floor. Dos hits a corkscrew tope onto Lince while landing on his feet. Dos kicks Lince to the apron. Dos brings Lince to the corner looking for the B13. Lince blocks and brings Dos onto the apron with him. They trade forearms. Dos German suplexes Lince on his head onto the steps! Holy cow, that was frightening. Dos puts Lince back in the ring and nails the Frog Splash for the pinfall in 12:55. Lince lays in the ring like a deadman, eerily similar to two seasons ago. This turned into a great match with a shocking, scary ending that really worked. Both men were flying around like mad and putting on a hell of a performance. ***1/4

Claudio drops Kingston back first off his shoulders onto the side of the apron! Claudio gets back in with the referee counting out Kingston. Kingston makes it in just in time, and Claudio immediately drops him with the Ricola Bomb. Kingston IMMEDIATELY pops up and Claudio drops him on his head with the dead-lift German Suplex. Kingston kicks out at two and the fans are going nuts. Claudio nails a lariat and Kingston again kicks out. Claudio uppercuts Kingston a few times and then places him up top. Claudio uppercuts Kingston on top and goes up with him. Claudio lands the gut-wrench suplex on Kingston from off the top rope, and only gets two once again! Claudio hits a bicycle knee and a rolling European uppercut for the pin in 15:53. Wow, wow, wow. These two started out hot and heavy and kept the pace till the end. The drama in the end with Kingston kicking out of everything was unreal, and it was one of the best matches both these guys have had in CHIKARA and one of the best matches in the company this year. ****1/2

Afterwards, Kingston grabs the microphone. He says he does NOT respect Claudio. He says it took all Claudio had to beat him, and he took him to the limit. Kingston says while he has the fans fooled, he knows that both Claudio and his partner are shady, dirty people who don’t reserve the respect of anyone. Kingston walks away, and as Claudio tries to stop him, Kingston turns around and delivers a backfist to Claudio. Kingston walks away pointing at Claudio and saying “I know you.”

Campeones de Parejas
The Colony (Fire Ant & Soldier Ant; Campeones) vs. The Osirian Portal (Amasis & Ophidian; Retadores)

The Colony have been champions since September 13th, 2009, and this is their second defense of the titles. Like all Campeones de Parejas matches, this will be contested 2 out of 3 falls.

Ophidian places Fire Ant on Amasis. Ophidian dives out onto Soldier Ant. Amasis hits Fire Ant with the Egyptian Conniption in 8:23 to score the first fall.

Ophidian gets sent to the floor by Fire Ant. Amasis takes down Fire Ant with a clothesline STO for two. The Osirian Portal isolate Fire Ant in their corner and trade partners frequently to maximize effectiveness. Fire Ant breaks from a legged full nelson from Ophidian and almost tags Soldier Ant, but the Portal cuts him off once again. Fire Ant escapes a double rolling STO and tags in Soldier Ant. Soldier Ant fights the Portal himself, drilling Amasis with a hard elbow. Soldier catches Ophidian off the top rope with a backbreaker. The Portal go up top once more. Soldier Ant goes up with Amasis and Fire Ant goes up with Ophidian. Fire Ant lands a super Beach Break on Ophidian while Soldier Ant hits a super TKO on Amasis. Fire Ant pins Ophidian for the win in 23:15 to retain their belts. Not their best match, but still excellent and a good main event to finish the finale. Really not a whole lot more to add. ****

The two BDK members in all white come through the crowd and into the ring. The bigger one grabs the microphone from Louden and hands it to the smaller one. He promised that a war was coming and is tired of waiting. Members of the roster come out to circle the ring. Mike Quackenbush and Claudio Castagnoli come in to square off with them. The BDK guy asks them not to insult him, and asks them to bring him the man with the real power, pointing to Ultramantis Black and Vökoder in the commentary booth. Mantis hands Vökoder the Eye of Tyr and both men head to the ring, as does Delirious. Vökoder and Mantis enter the ring as Carpenter Ant and Green Ant comfort The Colony. Mantis says he’s sick of the BDK guys and says he doesn’t even know who they are. The big one unmasks to reveal Tursas and the samller onre reveals to be Ares melee breaks out as Claudio hits the Sweet Schwinn Music on Quack, Carpenter Ant attacks the Colony, Vökoder attacks Ultramantis Black, and Sara Del Rey and Daizee Haze help them attack. Carpenter Ant unmasks to reveal himself as Pinkie Sanchez and Vökoder unmasks himself to be Tim Donst. Ares, Claudio, Tursas, Pinkie, Donst, Sara, and Daizee make a formation in the ring. They make a sign of a cross with their arms, then put them behind their backs. Tursas pulls out a remote and turns the arena black. Collectively, they’re known as The Brüderschaft.

The 411: A fantastic season finale show overall. The double main event was great, and as you can tell I adored the Kingston/Claudio match. There’s some other great three star matches here, and an ending that you really must see. The show does a great job of wrapping up season eight, and will make you excited for season nine. I give this a very high recommendation.
