The Young Bucks vs. Chase Owens & Yujiro Takahashi: This is part of the Bullet Club civil war angle. Owens has been on Omega’s side and has recently been tagging with Ibushi while Omega was away. Nick and Owens to begin. But before that, they all talk and exchange handshakes and dap. Yujiro and Owens attack and we’re underway. The Bucks fight them off and work double teams. They follow with stereo planchas. Nick and Owens back in and Nick lays in rights. More double teams follow, they then double-team Yujiro. Matt’s already favoring the back as Yujiro and Owens double team Nick, before knocking Matt to the floor. Owens & Yujiro work quick tags, taking the heat on Nick. Owens back in, hitting a back breaker, and covering for 2. More double teams follow. Yujiro hits a sliding dropkick for 2. He knocks Matt to the floor as Nick starts to make his comeback. He runs wild with kicks and knee strikes, until Owens cuts him off with a flatliner. Nick takes out Yujiro, and rolls for the tag. Matt follows with clotheslines but Owens blocks the superkick, only for Matt to get the sharp shooter. Yujiro makes the save. Matt spears both and Nick flies back in and they work over Owens. Nick hits a suicide dive on Yujiro, but Yujiro cuts off the Meltzer driver, allowing Owens to hit the jewel heist for 2. Yujiro is back, hits a fisherman’s buster on Matt and Owens hits the running knee strike for 2. Nick saves Matt from the package piledriver, the Bucks hit superkicks and Matt locks on the sharp shooter. Nick wipes put Yujiro and Owens taps. The Young Bucks defeated Chase Owens & Yujiro Takahashi @ 9:27 via pin [**¾] This was a pretty good opener, with the Bucks getting the rebound win, while Matt’s back injury continues to be an issue.

Toru Yano & Tomohiro Ishii vs. Taichi & Iizuka: Iizuka and Taichi attack before the bell and beat on Yano. Taichi and Ishii are in the ring, with Taichi raking the eyes. Taichi follows with leg kicks; Ishii gets pissed and fires back. The suplex follows but Iizuka hits Ishii with a chair and then takes out Yano. Taichi and Ishii follow to the floor. Taichi uses the bell hammer and attacks Ishii. Taichi and Ishii back in and Iizuka tags in and chokes out Ishii with his rope. He then bites Ishii. Taichi back in and Ishii fires back, but gets cut off right away. Taichi hits an enziguri and the pants are off. Iizuka bites him again, but Ishii bites him back and hits shoulder blocks. Yano tags in and he undoes the buckle pad and attacks with it, but Taichi takes it away and attacks him. Taichi sends Yano to the exposed buckle, Iizuka in and bites Yano. Iizuka hits the exposed buckle, and then bites Yano again. He uses the rope son Yano as Taichi takes out Ishii. Iizuka gets the iron fingers, Yano fights him off but Taichi breaks it up and tosses the ref down. Low blow by Yano, lariat by Ishii and Yano rolls up Iizuka for the win. Toru Yano & Tomohiro Ishii defeated Taichi & Iizuka @ 7:55 via pin [*] This was bad, with way too much Iizuka bullshit.

Never Openweight Six-Man Title Match: Champions Tama Tonga, Bad Luck Fale, & Tanga Loa vs. Michael Elgin, Togi Makabe, & Ryusuke Taguchi: Loa and Elgin to begin. They lock up, looking to work power vs. power. Loa hits a chop and struts a bit. He follows with rights, but Elgin lays in chops and grabs a side headlock. Loa hits a belly to back suplex, but Elgin maintains the headlock. They trade shoulder tackles, and Elgin hits a powerslam. The corner attack and missile dropkick follows and he covers for 2. Elgin follows with strikes, Tonga distracts him and Fale cuts off Elgin and drags him to the floor. The champions take control and roll Elgin back in, and start working quick tags. They have Elgin isolated in their corner, just pummeling Elgin. Fale cuts off the slam but Elgin keeps firing back. Fale misses a charge, and Makabe finally tags in and starts running wild. He lays in lariats on Fale & Loa, and follows with mounted strikes. The lariat gets 2. Fale finally hits a big shoulder block and cuts off Makabe. Taguchi gets the tag and misses an ass attack. Tonga misses Taguchi and hits Loa, and Taguchi hits running ass attacks on the guerrillas. Tonga fights off the dodon, but Taguchi hits an enziguri and ass attack for 2. It breaks down and the challengers isolate Tonga and work him over. Taguchi calls the plays, but the champions pull Makabe and Elgin to the floor and cut off Taguchi. They now work him over with corner attacks, but Taguchi makes the comeback with ass attacks. It breaks down and Taguchi hits an ass attack and 619 on Tonga. Tonga huts gun stun and picks up the win. Champions Tama Tonga, Bad Luck Fale, & Tanga Loa defeated Michael Elgin, Togi Makabe, & Ryusuke Taguchi @ 11:22 via pin [**½] This was a perfectly solid match, with the champions retaining, as they really should have.

David Finlay, Juice Robinson, & Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Hirooki Goto, Jay White, & YOSHI-HASHI: This is part of the build to the Juice vs. Goto & Finlay vs. White title matches that will be coming at the end of the month. White and Finlay go crazy fists to start. White powders but Finlay is fired the fuck up and follows, and beats White’s ass on the floor. Back in and White continues to control, working uppercuts. White finally cuts him off and it breaks down with brawling to the floor. White whips Finlay to the barricade, and then Goto joins in. Back in and HASHI works over Finlay, hitting the draping dropkick. Goto in and he continues working over Finlay. Finlay fires up, knocks White to the floor, and hits a dropkick on Goto, Juice tags in and he connects with jabs, and hits the full nelson bomb. Juice up top and hits a high cross for 2. Goto fights him off, they trade clotheslines but Goto hits the spin kick, and ushigoroshi. Both men are down. Tag to Tanahashi and he runs wild on HASHI. The flying forearm connects and uppercuts follow. Tanahashi hits the dragon screw, but HASHI hits the blockbuster as CHAOS clears the ring and works over Tanahashi. HASHI & Goto work double teams, and HASHI covers for 2. Finlay slides in and takes out HASHI. Stunner on White and they roll to the floor. Juice hits pulp friction on Goto, and he rolls to the floor. Tanahashi hits high fly flow on HASHI and that’s that. David Finlay, Juice Robinson, & Hiroshi Tanahashi defeated Hirooki Goto, Jay White, & YOSHI-HASHI @ 9:20 via pin [***] This was a good match, with a good sense of urgency and good interaction to set up Goto vs. Juice & Finlay vs. White.

SANADA, EVIL, & Tetsuya Naito vs. Minoru Suzuki, Lance Archer, & Davey Boy Smith Jr: This is part of the set up for Suzuki vs. Naito & LIJ vs. KES, also likely at the end of the month. Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Suzuki-gun attacks before the bell, and floor brawling is involved. Suzuki & Naito pair off to begin, Naito takes control and EVIL tags in as Naito lays in rights. LIJ works over Suzuki in their corner, working quick tags and controlling. Suzuki fires up with strikes, nit Naito cuts him off but Suzuki works the hanging arm bar in the ropes. Everyone brawls to the floor, with Suzuki & Naito brawling into the crowd, and Suzuki laying in some chair shots. Naito fires back as Archer scares a small child.

Suzuki continues to punish Naito, they roll back in and Suzuki works a knee bar and transitions into a heel hook. Naito barely makes the ropes and Smith tags in. The belly-to-belly follows for 2. Smith misses a top rope leg drop and Naito follows with a tornado DDT. He tags in SANADA and he runs wild with dropkicks on KES, and follows with a plancha onto Archer. Back in and Smith hits the northern lights suplex on SANADA for 2. SANADA escapes a powerbomb, and hits the springboard missile dropkick. Archer and EVIL in, EVIL hits the bulldog and senton. Archer cuts him off, Naito makes the save but Suzuki takes him to the floor. Archer hits EVIL with a black hole slam as Naito whips Suzuki to he barricade. SANADA & EVIL double-team Archer as Suzuki knee bars Naito on the floor. Smith saves Archer, and the two tag teams brawl, and the killer bomb connects on SANADA. EVIL fights them off, but they eventually hit the killer bomb on him for the win. Suzuki-gun defeated LIJ @ 11:27 via pin [***] This was another good match, with great Naito vs. Suzuki brawling, and KES picking up a big win, as we build towards two different title matches.

– Post match, Naito cuts a promo, calling out Suzuki for an IC title match, and telling him if he wants a fight to get into the ring. Suzuki calls Naito a piece of shit and proclaims himself the king of pro wrestling. Suzuki then kills a young lion, as Naito tells him to tranquilo.

– We get a G1 video, announcing tour dates.

IWGP Junior Tag Team Title Match: Champions Desperado & Kanemaru vs. Roppongi 3K vs. BUSHI & Hiromu Takahashi: Roppongi attack before the bell, and follow with dives, following up on their new found aggressive streak. They isolate Desperado and we’re officially underway. Roppongi work double teams, and then work over Takahashi. Romero distracts Takahashi, making him chase him to the floor, and allowing Roppongi to work over Desperado. BUSHI in and chokes out Yoh with his shirt to change the tide. Takahashi back in and works over Yoh with chops and dropkicks. LIJ works double-teams, picking up near falls. Desperado cuts off Takahashi and the Kanemaru tags in as BUSHI gets tossed to the floor. The champions work over Yoh, connecting with double teams and they start picking up near falls. Kanemaru continues the heat on Yoh, hitting a suplex for 2. Yoh hits a desperation enziguri and makes the tag. Sho in and he runs wild on Kanemaru, hits the dropkick and a spinebuster on Desperado. Kanemaru fights off the German, and lock son the crab. BUSHI makes the save, and it breaks down with BUSHI taking control until he gets knocked to the floor. Sho spears Takahashi and Yoh tags back in. BUSHI in and cuts him off, but Yoh fights LIJ off. 3k battles back, double teaming Takahashi until Kanemaru makes the save. Yoh take shim out and follows with a plancha. Sho hits a German on Takahashi, and then on BUSHI. Takahashi hits a superkick and BUSHI follows with an enziguri. BUSHI attacks Romero and Takahashi joins in. Sho saves him, and 3k work double teams on Takahashi. The champions make the save, but get dumped as LIJ make the comeback. BUSHI bits a suicide dive and Takahashi grabs Sho, and the time bomb gets 2. The Blu-ray follows. Time bomb again and Kanemaru pulls out the ref. Desperado in with a belt shot, and pinche loco follows for the win. Champions Desperado & Kanemaru defeated Roppongi 3K and BUSHI & Hiromu Takahashi @ 13:25 via pin [**] This was a flat and really disappointing match, too Americanized in the three-way formula; the pacing was really off, and it was really clunky. They need to move onto Desperado & Kanemaru vs. BUSHI & Hiromu Takahashi, and allow 3K as a trio to go after the trios bets or something, they need to get away from these triple threats and fast.

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title Match: Champion Will Ospreay vs. Marty Scurll: KUSHIDA is on Japanese commentary, so I could possibly see him making a post match challenge. They work some basic back and forth, Marty starts working some slick counters, but Ospreay has some nice counters and they work into a stand off, with Marty looking puzzled at Ospreay. Marty looks for a chicken wing, they work into a fun counter stretch and work into another stand off and Marty then backs off. Marty now connects with chops , but Ospreay picks up the pace, hitting a RANA and dropkick. Marty to the floor, but cuts off the springboard. Ospreay counters out and connects with the Sasuke special. Back in and Marty cuts Ospreay off, and hits a neck breaker in the ropes. The apron superkick follows. Marty follows with some chops on the floor, and then slams Ospreay to the barricade. Marty starts attacking the neck of Ospreay as they work back into the ring. The draping DDT gets 2. Marty now works a torture rack, and then follows with a short DDT for 2. Marty now works a Gory special, but Ospreay counters out, but Marty cuts off a RANA and slingshots him into the bottom rope. Marty follows with knee strikes and then grounds things with a neck crank. Ospreay finally counters out and hits the back handspring kick for the double down. Back to the feet, Ospreay tries to put some offense together; he’s slowed due to the neck, but finally hits a springboard attack, and then the standing shooting star for 2. Ospreay hits a superkick and German, but Marty counters into a DDT. Ospreay counters the chicken wing into a stunner and both are down. Ospreay fires back with strikes, but they tease finishers, and work into counters, and then fight over a backslide. Marty hits a version of the last shot, covering for 2. Marty slaps Ospreay around, but Ospreay catches him with a heel kick. Marty hits a vicious rebound lariat for 2. Marty attacks the neck again, and then pulls Ospreay to the floor and tombstones him on the floor! After working the count, they work back in and Marty covers for 2. Marty follows with a neck breaker, covering for 2. Marty keeps attacking the neck, Ospreay fires back with strikes, and they trade center ring. Marty hits the low superkick, but Ospreay hits an enziguri and sitout powerbomb!
https://twitter.com/MrLARIATO/status/980377044814123009
The Robinson special connects, the Oscutter is countered as Marty shoves Ospreay to he floor. They work to the apron, Marty hits an enziguri and Ospreay then hits a Spanish fly off the apron to the floor, and Ospreay caught his head on the way down and is busted open.
https://twitter.com/MrLARIATO/status/980377586646831104
They make it back in, and Ospreay hits a corkscrew shooting star press for an AWESOME near fall. Ospreay misses a shooting star press off the ropes, superkick by Marty to he back of the head for another great near fall. Marty looks to finish off Ospreay, but Ospreay fires up with a head kick, but Marty gets the chicken wing and they work into a series of pin attempts; Ospreay hits a desperation Oscutter, but can’t cover. Marty hits a piledriver, and the cover gets 2 as Ospreay barely kicked out. Marty attacks the fingers and hits a superkick and stomps the fuck out of Ospreay’s head and neck.

The chicken wing follows, and Ospreay barely makes the ropes. Marty hits a neck breaker driver, but Ospreay counters out of the tombstone into a stunner. The Oscutter finally connects and Ospreay manages to retain. Champion Will Ospreay defeated Marty Scurll @ 30:45 via pin [****¾] It was Easter Sunday, and Will Ospreay decided that he wanted to one up Jesus by dying and coming back on the same day in this match. There were a lot of people unhappy about “having to see this match again” since they have faced off a lot, but this was excellent. It started with them playing off of their past efforts and how well they knew each other. Ospreay was again trying to show that he’s a well rounded performer, which turned the momentum and that surprised Scurll. With Scurll thrown off of his game and looking to regain the championship, he got vicious, attacking Ospreay’s neck and really punishing him. Scurll was great here as the relentless heel, really punishing Ospreay, and Ospreay was absolutely tremendous in his selling and babyface comebacks coming at just the right time. This was excellent, they broke from formula, played off of previous matches, and absolutely killed it; this was big for both guys in terms of their standing in NJPW. The in showed that Ospreay beating Scurll wasn’t a fluke, and that he could move on and continue his legacy, as the new ace of the division. And the post match played perfectly into that, as Ospreay wants to continue proving himself, and HE challenged KUSHIDA for a title match.

– A close to death Ospreay cuts a post match promo, and calls out KUSHIDA. He wants to prove to everyone that he’s no fluke, and he wants them to face off one more time. KUSHIDA nods in acceptance,, give shim a thumbs up and claps for Ospreay.

Kenny Omega & Kota Ibushi vs. Cody & Hangman Page: This is part of the Bullet Club civil war angle, and also set up for Ibushi vs. Page & Omega vs. Cody at the ROH Supercard of Honor event. Cody and Omega start things off. Cody powders early, getting his stalling in. Page tags in, attacking Omega with strikes. The shoulder tackle follows, and he then lays in chops. Cody gets in cheap shot, and Omega tosses Page onto Cody and follows with a plancha onto both. Back in and Omega hits a high cross, Ibushi in and they work over Cody. They tease the golden trigger, but Page makes the save. But he gets double teamed right away, but cross slash is cut off. They brawl to the floor, and Cody tosses a chair into Omega’s face. Cody now takes control back in the ring on Ibushi; Page tags in and continues the heat. Double teams follow on Ibushi, Page slaps him around and but Ibushi hits the dropkick. Omega tags back in and he runs wild, all fired up. Cody cuts him off, and Page hits a neck breaker off of the second rope for 2. Cody tags back in, working over Omega in the corner. Page back in and they continue to work the heat on Omega. Quick tags by Cody & Page, continuing to isolate Omega. Cody works a butterfly lock, but Omega makes the ropes. Cody tosses him to the floor, and gets a table. Omega tries to fire back, and suplexes Cody on the floor. Page then slams Omega & Ibushi onto the table. He sets it up now, they lay Omega on the table, Cody up top and the Bucks are out. Cody is pissed. They argue, and the Bucks refuse to shake his hand. Cody rolls Omega back in and Omega fires back until Page cuts him off. Ibushi cuts off Cody and Omega hits a spin kick, catching Cody in the eye. Page cuts off Omega, knocking Ibushi to the floor. Cody’s busted open badly, and Omega makes the tag as Ibushi flies in with a missile dropkick. The RANA and kicks follow. Omega hits a Finlay roll and he and Ibushi hit moonsaults and shooting star presses for a near fall. Cross slash connects from the lovers. Back in and they work over Cody with double teams. They toss Page, they head up top for golden showers, but get cut off. Cody tosses Omega, Cody fights back, hitting a suplex on Ibushi for 2. Page is back in, Ibushi fights them off, Omega back in and Page hits the dropsault for 2. Page looks for rite of passage, countered, and Cody DDTs Ibushi, but eats a V trigger. Snapdragon on Page! Cody cuts him off with a power slam, but Page Germans Ibushi for 2. Ibushi tosses Page and cuts off Cody, Omega grabs him and looks for a one winged angel through the table, Cody fights him off, but Page and Ibushi are back, and Cody hit a doomsday dropkick for 2. Cody hits a disaster kick, and Page kicks Omega off the apron and through the table! Page misses the buckshot lariat, and Ibushi hits Cody with the last ride for 2. Cody avoids the knee strike, Ibushi hit a German, and looks for it again, but Page distracts him and Cody rolls up Ibushi with the tights for the win. Cody & Hangman Page defeated Kenny Omega & Kota Ibushi @ 22:25 via pin [****] This was a great match, they played off of the established feud very well, and Cody was not only busting as sin the ring, but once again killed it in terms of his character work. I also loved the short angle with the Bucks and Cody. Everyone delivered here, and it also set the stage well for the ROH Supercard of Honor matches.

– They beat down Ibushi post match, but Omega makes the save.

IWGP Title Match: Champion Kazuchika Okada vs. Zack Sabre Jr.: Okada has only submitted once in his career, three years ago by Nakamura. They go to the ground right away, with Sabre taking control. Okada tries to counter, and Sabre just walks away. Sabre keeps escaping Okada’s attempts at submissions. Sabre then grounds him again, and starts looking for pin attempts. Okada then overpowers Sabre, but Sabre escapes and looks to work the arm, but Okada takes him down and starts attacking the knee. Sabre counters back, looking for an arm bar. They work into a stand off. Sabre works into a cravat, grounding things. Really nice control by Sabre here, Okada makes the ropes and tries to pat Sabre on the head, and then drags Sabre to the ground and he starts working submissions, and into a clover leaf. Sabre counters out into a heel hook, but Okada rolls into an ankle lock. Sabre escapes that, and into a cradle for 2. Okada goes back to trying to overpower Sabre, but Sabre is too slick and counters out and takes control back. Okada finally cuts him off with an uppercut, looks for the cobra clutch, and they work into a series of counters. Sabre locks on a cobra twist, and then takes Okada to the corner, lays in uppercuts and starts attacking the leg of Okada. Sabre’s work is so smooth and effortless. They trade strikes and Sabre counters the dropkick and into a crossface.
https://twitter.com/MrLARIATO/status/980395456491597824
Not today motherfucker. Sabre starts working from submission to submission, but Okada makes the ropes. They trade big uppercuts, and Okada hits the flapjack. He follows with clotheslines back elbows and a big boot. He spikes Sabre with a DDT, but Sabre locks on the octopus in the ropes. Sabre attacks the arm, but Okada kicks him to the floor. Okada follows and whips Sabre to the barricade, and kicks him over it. Okada follows and dives over the barricade into a cross body. Back in they go, and Sabre counters the over the knee neck breaker into a submission, attacking the rainmaker arm. He then works a stretch muffler/triangle, but Okada makes the ropes. Sabre now starts stomping away at the arm, ties it up and continues abusing Okada’s killing arm. Sabre takes some time to relax and talk shit, and follows with uppercuts. He misses a charge, but locks on a guillotine. He transitions into the hanging kimura, but Okada escapes with the neck breaker. The slam follows, Okada up top and looks for the elbow drop but Sabre catches him into an arm bar attempt, but Okada rolls into the ropes. Sabre lays in kicks to the arm of Okada, they trade strikes, Okada starts walking through Sabre’s uppercuts and hits a John Wooo! Sabre battles back hitting uppercuts and counters a rainmaker, and attacks the arm with kicks; Okada hits a pair of desperation dropkicks to cut him off. Okada hits a tombstone, poses, and counters into the double arm lock. Okada rolls out, rainmaker countered into he European clutch for 2. Sabre counters the tombstone into a Gedo clutch and bridge for 2. They trade kicks from the mat, Sabre drops Okada and slaps him. Okada powers up and hits the dropkick. RAINMKER COUNTER again into the arm bar ala the way Nakamura submitted Okada. Okada fights, but Sabre has the triangle locked on now. Okada looks to powerbomb out, and hits a desperation rainmaker! RAINMAKER again! Sabre counters the third into an octopus hold, and now locks up both arms; Okada counters out and hits the tombstone. RAINMAKER and Sabre is finally done. Champion Kazuchika Okada defeated Zack Sabre Jr. @ 35:02 via pin [****¾] This was another excellent match, and felt very different from most Okada matches. Okada spent nearly 10-minutes working lucha style submissions, and that was all well and good, but Sabre finally figured out his game, and started to take control. Sabre took control, and showed that he did in fact have counters for every trademark Okada spot, including the rainmaker. Sabre’s early work on the arm is what allowed him to survive down the stretch, due to Okada being weakened, but the champion, as expected, overcame. The crowd was great for this, they were really worried for Okada, and were wowed at Sabre’s submission, and were rallying hard for the champion to overcome down the stretch. Okada varying his game and Sabre’s simply excellent, clinic like work, just meshed together so well here. Okada ties Tanahashi’s title defense record with the win, and Sabre is now a made man after this month, and I eagerly anticipate his 2018 G1 run.

– Post match, Gedo puts over Okada and asks who’s left to challenge Okada. The crowd chants for Tanahashi, and he arrives. Tanahashi says it’s taken a long time for them to get back here, and congratulates Okada on tying the record. He says he’s the only challenger left, and he will be the one to stop Okada’s run and also strop him from breaking the record. The crowd was into this, and while I highly anticipate people complaining about “another Okada vs. Tanahashi” match, I won’t. It makes sense with the record and also, I think they have rather amazing matches, so I won’t turn that down.

– End Scene.

– Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Very Good
The 411
The undercard was nothing special, it was solid and added to the build for future matches. The final three matches delivered huge, including two match of the year contenders. If pressed for time, watch those three matches.
