Gunther says Sheamus is the WWE star he would most like to retire, placing the former world champion at the top of his list during a recent appearance on Main Event Club. The Ring General has already retired the likes of Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles.
The comments came during a blind-ranking segment where Gunther was asked to rank wrestlers he would most want to retire from the business himself.
By the end of the discussion, Sheamus landed in the number one spot ahead of several major WWE names, including Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, and CM Punk. Gunther explained that his reasoning for choosing Lesnar would mainly revolve around publicity and attention. However, he described the situation involving Sheamus as more personal because of their history together in WWE.
According to Gunther, Sheamus was the first major opponent he faced after arriving on WWE’s main roster. He recalled the physical nature of their matches and said the veteran made him earn his spot (via Fightful).
“The thing with Brock is for publicity and is perfect. Sheamus, it’s a personal matter. I want to retire him. Subjectively, they are all good choices. On the main roster, Sheamus was my first big opponent, and he beat me up a lot. He made me earn it. I hope I can kick his a** on the way out.”
The two stars have shared several highly physical matches over the last few years, including bouts that received strong reactions from fans and critics alike. Sheamus is currently away from WWE television while recovering from a shoulder injury. WWE has not announced a timetable for his return to in-ring competition.
Meanwhile, Gunther remains part of the company’s main event scene and is next scheduled to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy.
