Backstage Update on WrestleMania 42 Plans for IYO SKY

With WrestleMania 42 just over a month away, fans are wondering what former Women’s World Champion IYO SKY will do at The Show of Shows in Las Vegas. The Genius of the Sky walked in as the Women’s World Champion at last year’s WrestleMania and managed to retain the title against Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair in a classic Triple Threat bout.
However, IYO is not involved in a world title picture this year. She failed to win the Women’s Royal Rumble in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and didn’t participate in the Women’s Elimination Chamber Match in Chicago last month. She also failed to earn a shot at AJ Lee’s Women’s Intercontinental Title during a Gauntlet Match this past Monday night on RAW.
Despite this, IYO SKY is expected to be featured in a major program at WrestleMania 42. Bodyslam+ is reporting that the former WWE Women’s Champion is expected to be involved with The Kabuki Warriors in Vegas this April. After months of tension between the former Damage CTRL stablemates, Asuka and Kairi Sane turned on IYO last September.
This led to a tag team match between The Kabuki Warriors and RHIYO (Rhea Ripley and IYO SKY) at Crown Jewel: Australia. IYO and Rhea emerged victorious in that bout. Since then, SKY has faced Kairi Sane in singles action, but the creative team “intentionally avoided long periods of in-ring action between SKY and Asuka, as that match is scheduled for WrestleMania 42,” per Bodyslam+.
The report further notes that there is an internal push to add Kairi Sane to the matchup and make it a Triple Threat affair. Given the way Asuka has been bullying Sane for the past several months, it’s inevitable that Sane will finally stand up to The Empress of Tomorrow, and this could well happen in the coming weeks, setting up a mouth-watering Triple Threat between the former allies at The Showcase of The Immortals.
