As noted previously, the seventh season of Dark Side of the Ring is set to return next month. The new season is set to premiere on VICE TV on July 7 with a two-episode opener followed by a single episode the following weeks.
The first topic, featuring the rise and turmoil in TNA Wrestling through the lens of co-founder Jeff Jarrett, will be covered across three episodes.
During a recent appearance on The Jim Cornette Experience, series co-creator Evan Husney revealed that the Jeff Jarrett story was initially planned to be a six-part standalone series titled ‘Six Sides of TNA.’ However, Vice didn’t agree to the proposition. He also added that they went to the network “begging and pleading” for the third hour to let the story “breathe a little bit more.” The third part, according to Husney, deals with Jarrett’s addiction struggles and covers the Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan era of TNA.
Below are the highlights [per WrestlingNews.co]:
On initial plans for Jeff Jarrett’s TNA story
“We kind of went to the network, begging and pleading for that third hour, so we could let the story breathe a little bit more. Originally it was going to be six parts. More as a standalone thing. It was going to be the six sides of TNA, is what we were going to call it. The idea was to continue in that tradition and do TNA as the next sort of deep dive exploration that we would have done on its own, and then maybe we could have done ECW… But for whatever reason, Vice didn’t want to do that.”
On what fans can expect from the Jeff Jarrett part of TNA story
“So many people break down and they cry. This is a very emotional story that I don’t think people are going to be prepared for.”
Meanwhile, Jim Cornette, who is featured in the episodes, claimed that the series highlights how Jarrett kept the company afloat despite numerous issues that surrounded him, including a power struggle with Dixie Carter and more. The veteran also noted that the episodes showcase Jeff’s personal struggles, including the death of his first wife from cancer, his issues with his father, and the untimely demise of his friend Owen Hart.
