John Cena Comments on Gunther’s WWE Booking Since His Retirement Match

John Cena recently commented on Gunther’s WWE booking in recent months.
Gunther arguably had the biggest moment of his career last December when he forced John Cena to submit in his retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. He subsequently went on to retire AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble.
However, The Ring General’s booking since then has been questionable. His WrestleMania 42 match with Seth Rollins, albeit a banger, was booked at the last minute. Following that, he moved to SmackDown, where he suffered pinfall defeats to then-Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and most recently took the pin in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match Triple Threat Qualifier against CM Punk and Finn Balor.
The Austrian has also been involved in backstage segments with Danhausen recently. During a recent appearance on Busted Open Radio, John Cena addressed views of a section of fans who believe that WWE hasn’t capitalized on the momentum that Gunther gained after forcing Cena to tap out last December. Cena admitted that may well be the case but then added that he is not privy to the creative team’s meetings behind closed doors and its plans for the former World Heavyweight Champion in the long run.
Here’s what Cena said [quotes via Fightful]:
“I know there’s sentiment out there that, like, ‘Man, they’re wasting GUNTHER!’ Maybe currently they are. But I don’t see the view from the penthouse. I’m not in those meetings where they’re just looking at the whiteboard, connecting the dots. Maybe they’re just cooling him off. Maybe they’re putting him away from TV. I don’t know. What I am gonna do is I’m not gonna challenge the opinion of, ‘Aye, I’m not gonna give this for this guy, and you’re gonna forget him.’ This is the work that I need to do for today, and we’re gonna make him look the best we can, and I’m gonna give him as much steam as I can, and what you do with it afterwards, that ain’t my call.”
Elsewhere, Cena commented on LA Knight possibly beating Roman Reigns at WWE Money in the Bank 2026. Check his comments HERE.
