Layla El recently recalled a key milestone in her WWE career, reflecting on her singles debut from the December 1, 2006, episode of SmackDown. The match, which saw her face Kristal Marshall in her first one-on-one contest after winning the 2006 Diva Search, marked the beginning of Layla’s run as an in-ring performer.
In a new post on X, Layla acknowledged how inexperienced she felt during that debut and said she learned in real time as fans followed her early progress. She thanked Kristal for guiding her through the moment, calling her “supportive, kind, and patient” and crediting her with making the experience manageable. Layla noted that the match stayed with her over the years due to the mix of nerves, excitement, and pressure that came with performing live on SmackDown so early in her career.
“I still remember this like it was yesterday — the fear, the shock, the adrenaline. I was so inexperienced, but I learned in real time with the fans who voted for me and gave me this opportunity. And Kristal was incredible that night… supportive, kind, and patient with me. One day I’ll share everything that really happened during my first-ever match on TV. 💋”
Layla plans to share a more detailed account of the night in the future, noting the emotional extremes she felt, including shock, fear, and the adrenaline rush of stepping into a WWE ring for the first time.
The debut was her first step in what became a successful WWE run, which included reigns as Divas Champion and Women’s Champion before her exit in 2015. She was present during her LayCool partner Michelle McCool’s WWE Hall of Fame induction earlier this year and spoke about a potential induction for herself.
