-We press on with 1994 and I think I am skipping Mania X next just so I can get to the shows I don’t have copies of with physical media. I will trace back once the library leaves Peacock until they figure out where it’s going. Away we go!
-Announce Team: Tony Schiavone and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan
-Feb. 20, 1994
-Albany Civic Center, Albany, GA
-Attendance: 7600
-PPV Buys: 110,000
-Tony and Bobby welcome us to the show and we get footage of Michael Hayes turning on Johnny B. Badd and knocking him out on Saturday Night.
Johnny B. Badd vs. Michael PS Hayes
-Jimmy Garvin, in a suit, is back and he is pushing Hayes in a wheelchair. Gene goes to see what’s happening and he has Commissioner Nick with him. Hayes congratulates Nick on his new position and wants to mention they felt he was the greatest World Champion of all time. Hayes and Garvin have different stories about what happened, but they make sure to note again, that Nick is the Greatest World Champion. They produce a doctor’s note as Hayes says this is killing him. Garvin mentions he would wrestle with one hand behind his back if needed, but he is retired. Nick: “not for long.” Funny! Nick tells Garvin he is taking Hayes place as the contract is for a Freebird. Garvin says he has no gear, but Gene says that can find gear for him. Nick says they will be fined and suspended if Garvin doesn’t step in the ring and he is giving him 40-45 minutes.

Harlem Heat vs. Thunder and Lightning
-So just by the names we have Heat and Thunder in the NBA and Lightning in the NHL covered. Lightning is future nWo Sting and he starts with Kole (Booker T). Lightning works the arm, but Booker rolls out and reverses. He switches to a hammerlock, but Lightning counters and Kole bails to the ropes to force a break. Lightning gets a take down and hooks a hammerlock. Kole with elbows and forearms to the head to break, but Lightning catches him with a hip-toss and follows with a dropkick. Back to the arm-bar! Tag to Thunder and he hooks a top wrist-lock. Kole pulls the hair, but Thunder rolls into a hammerlock and then uses the other arm to turn Kole over for a two count. Kole gets in a shot to the gut and gets a slam. Tag to Kane (Stevie Ray) and he misses a clothesline, which lets Thunder hit a shoulder tackle. Lighting strikes off the top with a double ax handle. Kane goes to the eyes and gets a slam. He misses an elbow though and Lightning goes back to the arm. Kane lands some clubbing blows to the back and tags Kole, who runs into a hip-toss. Thunder back in and he brings the boom with a knee-lift for two and back to an arm-bar. The Heat are getting smoked here! Kole with forearm, but again, he misses and Thunder gets a slam. Kane hits Thunder from the apron and that lets Kole send him to the floor. Kane throws Thunder into the railing and sends him back into the ring. Heenan has been on a weird rant the entire match calling Thunder and Lighting “Batman and Robin” due to them wearing capes during their entrance. Kane with a clothesline for two. Kole back in and he hits a flying forearm and lays in the boots. Heenan: “Harlem Heat are pounding the weather here.” We go split scree and see Flair in his dressing room and Arn Anderson and Ricky Steamboat are with him. The crowd starts a Thunder chant and he rallies with a sunset flip, but Kole made the tag on the way down. Double axe from Kane gets two. Kole back in and he misses an elbow from the top rope. The race is on and Thunder makes the tag to Lightning. He runs wild with slams and dropkicks. He hits a solid belly-to-belly suplex, but Kane makes the save. Everyone in the ring and Lightning gets a roll-up, but the ref was putting Thunder out and didn’t see Kane deck Lightning. Kole rolls over for the cover and pin at 9:44.
Winners: Harlem Heat via pin at 9:44
-Not a great opener! Harlem Heat would get better and Lightning would get his most famous role a few years later. This is super basic as Thunder and Lightning would be developmental kids in the PC today. *
The Equalizer vs. Jungle Jim Steele
-He’s not Evad Sullivan yet, but we are getting close. Steele starts fast with a series of arm-drags and The Equalizer slows things down. He lands some forearms to the back and runs him head first into the top buckle. Steele blocks another trip into the buckle and sends Equalizer instead. He goes to work on the arm and this crowd is just gone. Steele with a roll-up for two. Heenan breaks Tony by calling Equalizer’s boots, “Hair Jordans.” It made me laugh too! Steele with a monkey flip followed by a dropkick. He goes for another monkey flip out of the corner, but The Equalizer holds the tights to blow. Equalizer drops a leg as he is letting his inner Hulk-a-maniac out months before we knew. They head to the floor and Equalizer runs Steele back first into the apron. Equalizer with a backbreaker for two and then hooks a bear-hug. Joy! Heenan’s sole purpose during this match seems to be to break Tony. Heenan mentions Hogan again and I wasn’t watching the PPVs at the time so I missed all of this. I had no clue they had been teasing Hogan since January. Steele mounts a comeback from the floor and gets an atomic drop and dropkick. He follows with a clothesline and then after an awkward reversal to the ropes, hits The Steele Trap (Thesz Press) for the pin at 6:29.
Winner: Jungle Jim Steele via pin at 6:29
-God Bless Heenan for trying to put over why The Steele Trap is an effective move. This was worse than the opener as the crowd didn’t care about either man and they wrestled in silence. Again, this is something we would see on WWE LFG but edited and constant shots of the judges. DUD
-Gene plugs his Hotline and brings out Ricky Steamboat. He wants a Title Match against whoever walks out of The Cage tonight. He complains about going through a lot of red tape to get to this point. Man, Dragon was really a dick during this run. Nick says Dragon is more than deserving and deserves the shot no matter who wins tonight.
Diamond Dallas Page vs. Terry Taylor
-Page is a little pudgy here and you would be shocked to learn he would be World Champion five years later at this point. Taylor goes to the gut and hits a knee-lift. He hooks a cross arm-breaker and yells for the ref to “ask him.” Page gets his legs to the ropes and forces a break. The Diamond Doll checks on Page on the floor and Heenan wants her to come by and fix on his arm. Tony brings up that Heenan once managed Taylor, and Heenan says he wouldn’t take direction. RED ROOSTER! Page with a sunset flip for two and they keep going back and forth with covers. Fun spot, but the crowd doesn’t care about any of this. Page with a slam, but Taylor kicks him away. Clothesline from Taylor gets two. Page responds with a back elbow and stomps away. Page talks trash as she stomps Taylor around the mat. He goes after the arm and shoulder and then back to the trash talk. Taylor with a right hand and they trade blows in the corner. Page with a suplex into a slam for two. That was kind of a modified Jackhammer, but without any power behind it. Gut-buster from Page and he drops an elbow for two as Taylor gets his foot on the ropes. Belly-to-back suplex gets two. Page hooks a Cobra Clutch and takes it to the mat. Heenan kills time by letting Tony know that Solie and Larry don’t like him. Taylor starts to rally, but a clothesline cuts him off and it gets two. Sleeper from Page and he pulls Taylor down by the hair. Heenan trying to crack Tony is the only thing keeping me interested in this one. Taylor finally gets a belly-to-back to break and follows with a dropkick. He sets too early on a backdrop so Page runs him face first into the mat. Back to the reverse chinlock as this one is making me nod off. Taylor wakes up and gets a cross-body, but Hayes is up first and delivers a kick-out punch but it only gets two. Page misses a charge in the corner and Taylor gets a roll-up at 11:47.
Winner: Terry Taylor via pin at 11:47
-Page was green so they put him in there with Taylor to help make him look passable. It kind of worked, but wasn’t much to this one. *
-Spring Stampede commercial! Heenan makes a joke about stampeding the Diamond Doll that was with DDP.
Johnny B. Badd vs. Jimmy Garvin (w/ Michael Hayes)
-Garvin has short hair which looks weird and this is his match in over two years according to Heenan. He fixes his hair and struts as he stalls. Wouldn’t be a Birds match with someone stalling. Badd with a hammerlock but Garvin counters and it’s a stalemate. Tony even notes it is odd to see Garvin with short hair. After more stalling we get another lockup. Badd with a side headlock, but Garvin shoots him off. Badd goes right back to the hammerlock and into a side headlock. Hayes wishes he was in there as he would knock Badd out again. Garvin counters with a head scissors and gloats to the crowd. Badd counters back into a hammerlock and drives a knee into the back. Badd grabs the other arm and gets Garvin over for a two count. Funny moment as Garvin tells the ref to shut up as he is being forced on his shoulders. Hayes complains about a hair pull, but the ref isn’t buying it. Standing armbar from Badd. Garvin backs him into the corner and offers a clean break so he can play to the crowd some more. We have had four minutes of not much happening. Another lockup and Badd gets a suplex and into the armbar again. Hayes keeps playing to the camera focused on him which has been the most enjoyable thing about the match to this point. Garvin uses the hair to get a take down, but cowers in the corner to slow things down. Great! Garvin calls time and goes to conference with Hayes. The crowd is getting into this which makes them better than me. We go again and right back to a hammerlock from Badd. Garvin forces Badd into the corner and delivers some knees. He blocks a charge with a boot to the face and gets a two count. Badd gets run into the top buckle and then again. We had too much excitement so Garvin goes to a reverse chinlock. Hayes continues to be the best part of the match as he yells “hi” to Heenan and they have a funny exchange. That was great! Badd tries a comeback but gets caught with a knee to the gut. That gets two so Garvin sets for the DDT. Badd backdrops out and we get mostly cheers, but you can hear some boos. Badd throws body blows and gets a flying head scissors. Backdrop to Garvin! The Kiss That Don’t Miss, missed, but Badd lands an uppercut. He heads up top and comes off with a sunset flip for the pin at 10:46.
Winner: Johnny B. Badd via pin at 10:48
-This was boring for about 7 minutes before it finally got going. Hayes was entertaining though. *
-Badd goes after Hayes, but Garvin makes the save. Hayes throws a cowboy boot to Garvin, who decks Badd and then he hits him with The 9-1-1, which is a STONE COLD STUNNER!. Cool!
-Gene walks down a hall in the back and spies on Vader, who is destroying things with a chair. He chases Gene away and throws a chair at the door.
WCW World Television Championship: Lord Steven Regal (c) (w/ Sir William) vs. Arn Anderson
-It’s a Title Match so we get Buffer doing the in ring introductions. The regular time limit for the TV Title is 15 minutes, but they have extended it to 30 for this match. Well, we know we are going long now. Regal has his quad taped and make your own HHH joke. Arn offers a handshake, but Regal looks at him with disgust. Lockup as the crowd starts a USA chant. Speaking of the USA, how about that World Cup Draw? USA vs. Australia should be fun for people in both WWE and AEW. Regal complains about Arn attacking the ear. Arn responds with a side headlock. Regal gets to the ropes and it’s a break. Arn with another side headlock and we repeat with the ear issue. Heenan starts talking about The Cartoon Network and I guess Netflix owns all that content now. Regal goes after the arm, but Arn counters and steps on Regal’s arm. Heenan tells people to call their friend and gets them to order. No way I am ordering show 80 minutes after it started. Today’s kids can just jump on the stream and go back when needed. I am going to be talking about a few different things as we wait for this match to get rolling. Test of Strength and Regal wins the first battle. Arn powers up and Regal goes to a bridge with his beck, but Arn trips the leg. He goes to work on the arm which causes Regal to break by landing an up-kick. European Uppercut sends sweat flying. Regal with a cross-face and one armed chicken leg. He transitions to a hammerlock and then throws forearms to the face. We get the dreaded full crowd shot as the director is bored. Arn counters into his own hammerlock and gets a hammerlock slam. They jockey for position in the corner and Arn delivers a shoulder to the gut. Back to the hammerlock and the struggle over that which brings realism to the match, but the crowd doesn’t care. Heenan brings up he was the All Madden Coach in 1988 and that would be brought up when Heenan coached Flair and Arn in 1996. Arn wakes the crowd up by wrapping Regal’s around the post. William pulls out the pocket watch and tells Regal there are 15 minutes left. 20 actually, but why count? Back in the ring Regal gets a cravat. Arn tries to slam his way out but Regal holds and maintains the hold. He works to get several two count as William tells the ref to count faster. Arn clips the break to force a break and goes right back to the hammerlock. We are told 15 minutes have go by, but it’s been 12:40. Regal back with a head scissors and then turns into a reverse chinlock. He makes sure to grind the forearm along the face. We get a camera shot over the shoulders of Heenan and Tony at ringside as Heenan explains how wearing tape can help rip the eyes. Arn gets a backdrop for a one count which gets a pop from the crowd. Arn slows it down as he goes back to the arm. We have crossed the 15 minute mark for real, so a regular TV Title match would be done by now. Regal throws forearms to the face. Arn responds by sending Regal back first into the corner and then drops a series of knees. Regal bails to the floor and has William check the time again. Arn gets a one count back in the ring, but Regal slips in a punch to the face from his back. Cool! Euro Uppercut rocks Arn, so he rolls to the apron. Sir William gets in a shot with the umbrella to get the crowd back into it a bit. This is a match straight out of the Bill Watts Era and I appreciate the hard work and sweat, but man is this going long and feeling even longer. Regal hooks a half-crab and uses the ropes, but the ref catches him and forces a break. Regal flattens Arn out and wraps the legs. He hooks an arm for good measure as he is working for a submission. SIr William gives some added leverage from the floor. William tells Bobby that are 7 minutes left and my timer says we just hit the 20 minute mark. Arn is able to work in position to get the leg and goes for the figure-four, but Regal kicks him away. Arn ends up on the floor and Sir Williams hits him in the back of the head with the umbrella handle while Heenan misquotes Chris Berman. Arn shakes it off though and trips Regal. He rams the bad leg off the apron and gets a standing knee-bar. He jams the knee into the mat. Regal back with a trip and gets a two count into a top wrist lock. Five minutes to to apparently! Regal buries a knee in the back and hooks a chinlock. Hard whip to the corner as we have four minutes left. Regal goes for a cover and then another, but Arn is out at two. They start trading strikes as we nearing the end and they have to show some desperation. Arn gets multiple two counts and we get into a knuckle lock with each man trying to force a pin on the other. Arn is out at two multiple times as we go under two minutes. Regal with a leg trip, but gets caught with a body scissors. Regal back to his feet and tries a Boston Crab, but can’t get Arn over. Arn gets a sleeper and then gets a roll-up for two. One minute to go! Arn with a roll-up for two as Heenan starts counting down. SPINEBUSTER from Arn wakes the crowd up as we have 30 seconds. William gets involved, but Arn doesn’t charge after him. Arn goes for a sunset but Regal sits down and grabs the umbrella for extra leverage and gets the pin with 6 seconds left at 27:34.
Winner and Still WCW World Television Champion: William Regal via pin at 27:34
-That was long! They worked hard and the sweat was flying, but I don’t see why they couldn’t have had a tighter match with the 15 minute time limit. I assume with the two Main Events being in cages, they didn’t want them going long, so this match had to carry the load. **
-Back at The Clash of Champions, Cactus and Maxx got a non-title win over The Nasty Boys and that leads to the next match.
WCW World Tag Team Titles: The Nasty Boys (c) vs. Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne
-Well, this won’t be anything like the previous match. Missy Hyatt is not with The Nasty Boys and Heenan claims she is at the Mayo Clinic having her gums repaired after being kissed by Cactus Jack. She would be fired shortly after this show. She claims it was over her going above Bischoff’s head over a sexual harassment case and he says it was due to her behavior and jealousy over Sherri being brought into the company. Bischoff has his side of the story in his book if you want to give it a read. Tony: “Only in World Championship Wrestling can a man come in wearing black trimmed with skulls.” Yeah, about that! Payne starts and he throws both members of The Nasty Boys around the ring. Knobbs starts firing away with forearms, but gets caught with a nasty looking urinage. Sags rushes in and eats a World’s Strongest Slam as Payne is dominating and the crowd loves it. Jack in and he dominates as well as he gets the mount on Sags and repeatedly punches him in the face. The Nasty Boys bail to the floor and the crowd goes crazy for Jack and Payne. It’s cool seeing a team get over naturally like this. Jack gets caught by Sags which brings Knobbs back in. Jack decks him and drops a leg on the apron. Bobby is ready to bail as they are fighting too close to him. Payne back in and he rams Knobbs face first into the mat for a two count. Knobbs goes to the eyes, but gets dropped trying a shoulder tackle. Sags sneaks in from behind and clips the knee as Knobbs hits a clothesline. The ref forces Jack out and Sags hits a borderline line blow which gets a groan from the men in the crowd. The Nasty Boys make a wish with Payne’s legs. Knobbs tries a slam, but it gets countered as Payne gets his own slam. He misses an elbow though and Knobbs drops one of his own. He heads to the middle rope, but Payne avoids a back splash. Tags on both sides and Jack gets a knee-lift. He drops all his weight on Sags on the ropes and then a Cactus clothesline takes him and Knobbs to the floor. Cactus Elbow, but Sags decks him. Knobbs pulls the mat back and JACK TAKES A SICK BUMP OFF THE APRON ON THE BACK OF HIS HEAD. Tony says they need to see that again. Bobby: “No we don’t.” Truth! Knobbs throws Jack into the railing and of course Jack makes sure to crack his head on that one too. He is bleeding from the mouth as we get a replay of the sick bump. Ouch! Heenan: “A horse would still be laying on the cement. And so would a Gorilla.” I’ve heard a Gorilla can beat 100 men. Knobbs gets a Boston Crab back in the ring. Sags in and he drops an elbow before getting his own Boston Crab. Jack is pouring blood from his mouth as it is getting all over the canvas. The Nasty Boys keep trading off behind the ref’s back as they continue to use a Boston Crab. Payne keep rushing in which is only hurting things. Patrick catches the Nasty Boys trying to switch off again, so Payne pulls Jack closer to the corner. Hot Tag, but the ref didn’t see it. He forces Payne out and Jack hits a double DDT to pop the crowd. Now the Hot Tag to Payne and he runs wild. Overhead suplex drops Knobbs on his head. Ouch! These teams just beat the tar out of each other. Payne gets the Pain Killer, but Sags grabs a guitar and waffles Payne with it for the DQ at 12:28. Remember that guitar shot come May.
Winners: Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne via DQ at 12:28
-Fun match with sick bumps and people being dropped on their heads. These teams have good chemistry and these first matches were just setting the table for what was to come when they unleashed the two teams. ***1/4
-They show a replay of that suplex on Knobbs and he landed right on his face and it just looked brutal.
-Gene is backstage with Flair and Steamboat and Gene mentions Hulk Hogan is watching at his home. Flair says that would be the biggest match of all time, but he is focused on Vader and if he gets by him, Steamboat is next. Dragon is still complaining about red tape and fighting for a year to get this match. Arn steps in and tells Ric he knows what he has to do and to take it to Vader tonight.
-The Thunder Cage is lowered from the ceiling and has pyro. This is the cage that is similar to the WWF blue bar cage, but goes around the ring side area (like Hell in a Cell) and has a slanted roof that doesn’t completely cover the top. The cage itself is similar to the one Hogan and Piper used at Halloween Havoc minus the roof section.
Thunder Cage: ”Ravishing” Rick Rude, “Stunning” Steve Austin and “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff vs. Sting, “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes and Brian Pillman
-Tony just said this is anything goes inside Thunder Cage and yet, we have tags in and out of the ring. I hate when they do that in cage matches. Just let everyone go and tear the house down! Sting starts with Rude and backdrops him and follows with a series of clotheslines. Rude hides under the ropes and the ref holds Sting back. Why? Lockup and Rude grabs an arm and tags in Wonderful. He works the arm as well and hooks an armbar. Austin in and they double team Sting. Austin does the deal where he fakes blowing out his knee, and Sting isn’t buying it. He hooks The Scorpion, but Wonderful in to save. Austin gets a roll-up with the tights for two. They fight to the floor and Austin goes into the cage first. Pillman follows after and lays in a chop. Austin goes back first into the cage again and we head back into the ring. Pillman in as The Blondes Explode again! LOUD chop from Pillman as they fight on the floor. Pillman charges and Austin elevates and tosses him into the cage. Cool! Wonderful sends Austin into the cage and the ref stops him. Again, why? Pillman is bleeding from the head. Back in the ring Rude bites the bloody head and drops an elbow. Austin chokes from the apron as Wonderful has the ref pulled away. Wonderful charges, but Pillman gets a knee up. He doesn’t go for the tag though and Wonderful drops him with a belly-to-belly. Rude back in and he heads up top and comes off with a knee. Austin back in and gets a slam. He comes off the middle ropes with a forearm. Wonderful rushes in with a cheap shot. Heenan: “Anything goes and no disqualification.” Then why are Sting and Rhodes waiting for a tag? I know, it’s to build the drama. Pillman gets the hot tag to Sting and he runs wild with clotheslines. Wonderful tries to bail but Sting follows and sends Wonderful into the cage. Wonderful is bleeding from above the eye and Dustin gets the tag for the first time. He goes to the Flip, Flop, and Fly and drops an elbow. Wonderful uses the tights to stop Dustin’s momentum and crawls to make the tag to Rude. Dustin greets him with right hands and goes for the bulldog, but Rude counters and sends Dustin balls first in the corner. Rude with a belly-to-back suplex and hooks a bear-hug. Dustin tries to punch his way out, but Ride hits a belly-to-belly suplex. Austin in and continues to take the biggest bumps in the match as he gets dropkicked off the apron and into the cage. Dustin comes out of the corner with a back elbow and dives to get a tag to Pillman. Backdrop to Austin and he decks Rude and Wonderful as well. Now everyone in the ring and the crowd goes crazy. We needed this from the start. A clothesline sends Rude to the floor. Sting press slams Pillman onto Austin for the pin at: 14:37.
Winners: Sting, Dustin Rhodes, and Brian Pillman via pin at 14:37
-The crowd loved this and it was a fun match, but I wanted more chaos and blood. I like it was kept relatively short as the idea is that it’s a cage match and they don’t last long because they are so dangerous. ***1/2
-They continue to fight after the match and Rude slams the cage door on Sting’s face and hits him with a Rude Awakening.
-We get a recap of what’s led to Flair/Vader III. Flair is the one that pushed for this match as Vader went after his friend, Ricky Steamboat. Nick sets The Boss as the special referee for the match.
WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Thunder Cage: Ric Flair (c) vs. Vader (w/ Harley Race) -As mentioned, The Boss (Man) is the special referee for this one. Vader is rocking his white fur cape and his WCW theme still SLAPS! Vader charges, but Flair avoids and starts firing off right hands. Flair was vocal in the build to this match that he was going to run circles around Vader. He lands a back elbow that sends Vader over the top and to the floor. A kid tells out “you suck,” to Vader. Flair uses a chair and dents it over Vader’s head. The Boss starts counting Vader out which is stupid as it’s a cage match and there should be no count-outs. I hope that was a mistake and Boss just wanted to do something to make it seem like he was a real ref. Flair runs at Vader one time too many and gets dropped this time. A slam sets up a Vader Bomb and it connects much to the horror of the crowd. Another slam and this time Vader heads all the way up for the moonsault but Flair rolls out of the way. Vader is up first and drops Flair. He pitches Flair to the floor and the Boss argues with Vader instead of counting Flair out. Race chokes Flair through the cage which is legal in this match. Now Boss starts his count and I still think that’s stupid. Vader lands a knee to the head and Race gets in another cheap shot. Back in the ring Flair starts going to the boxing in the corner. Flair responds, but one punch drops him. He sprints back to his feet and chokes Vader. That doesn’t last long as Vader slugs him down again. Race with a headbutt through the cage bars and again, all legal. Vader gets a suplex to bring Flair back ino the ring. Superplex and that almost went bad as Vader nearly bounced over and on top of Flair. Vader misses some elbows as Flair rolls to the floor. Harley gets involved again and that’s enough for The Boss as he tries to handcuff Race to the cage. Vader saves and The Boss gets cuffed to the cage. Vader steals his nightstick while Race took the key and unlocked the door so he can help Vader. Big splash from Vader as Harley directs traffic. Arn Anderson is down but he can’t get in the cage as Race locked it after going through the door. Vader and Race end up colliding and the place goes crazy as Flair starts his comeback. Dragon is out and tries to use a chair to break the lock. Flair is doing fine though as he has a chair and goes back and forth between Vader and Race with it. The Boss ends up breaking the cuffs and starts beating on Vader with a nightstick which seems totally unfair. Figure Four and The Boss calls for the bell at 11:32. Heenan immediately claims that Vader never gave up. So a screw job you say?
Winner and Still WCW World Heavyweight Champion: Ric Flair via submission at 11:32
-This was way too overbooked with the ref beating up the challenger. This was disappointing compared to the other matches they had. The crowd was into it though. **3/4
-Vader is pissed after the match and rages as Heenan looks like he is going to piss himself in fear. After he leaves, Tony wraps things up as Heenan says he will get to the bottom of this.
