Mercedes Mone Discusses the Fans Calling Her Unsafe in the Ring

– During a recent interview with HOT 97 ahead of AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, AEW TBS Champion Mercedes Mone discussed fans accusing of her being unsafe in the ring earlier in her career. Below are some highlights (via WrestlingInc.com):
Mercedes Mone on fans complaining she was unsafe in the ring: “I was so depressed by that. Like…it definitely sent me on a spiral of depression because…wrestling has always been my goal and dream, and I’ve always wanted to be the greatest at it. So to hear any kind of noise that people might not think you’re safe…it wasn’t even the boys in the back, it was the fans thinking ‘You’re not safe.'”
On how wrestlers do all they can to protect each other: “It’s scary sometimes, but that’s the business we’re in. You never know when you’re going to get hurt, you never know when you’re going to sprain something, break a neck, break a knee. It’s just the business. You have to go out there, knowing you’re going to put your life on the line. But we do everything we can to protect each other. And unfortunately that happened.”
At AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, Mercedes Mone beat Stephanie Vaquer to win the NJPW STRONG Women’s Title in a title vs. title match. The event was held at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, and it was broadcast live on pay-per-view.
