The Name on the Marquee: Smoky Mountain Wrestling (10.21.1995)

-Originally aired October 21, 1995.

-Your hosts are Les Thatcher & Chip Kessler.

THE THUGS vs LARRY SANTO & RON DAVIS
-Tracy Smothers starts off with Davis. Davis shoulderblocks Smothers, but runs into a clothesline. Thugs chop him down and Dirty White Boy just beats on him like Ron farted in his soup. Big boot and a knee by DWB, who demands that Cornette bring his sissy boys to the ring for some real competition. Larry Santo tags in and the jobbers successfully back Smothers into their corner and gang up on him, but Smothers manages to fight them off, and a double Bucksnort Blaster gets the win.

-Robert Gibson promises The Thugs that justice will be done during the Halloween Scream Tour.

-Les Thatcher talks to Buddy Landell, who teases a surprise partner, but then admits, “he didn’t want anything to do with me.” So Buddy’s back is against the wall, but he’s already embarrassed Tommy Rich on TV and he can do it again.

ROBERT GIBSON vs MOSH
-Backdrop by Robert, and a dropkick sends Mosh retreating to the corner. Gibson London bridges him and Mosh goes scurrying to the other corner of the ring. General Cornette arrives at the commentary table while Gibson drops a fist between the eyes. Arm wringer as the Heavenly Bodies show up at ringside (Cornette: “They’re thirsty, the building’s crowded”) and Mosh attacks Gibson. The Thugs show up and Cornette starts crying about how a tag team showing up uninvited is cheating. Bossman legdrop by Mosh (called a “flying crotchlock headstrangle” by Cornette) and he plants Gibson on the top rope for a superplex, but Gibson reverses it into a gourdbuster. Bodypress off the top gets two. Prichard trips Gibson, who Cornette suspects is drunk because he’s friends with Buddy Landell now. Prihard and the referee argue while the Thugs double-team Mosh, and Gibson gets the pin as soon as the referee turns around.

KESSLER’S KORNER
-Chip welcomes the Heavenly Bodies. Cornette says it’s BS that Gibson and the Thugs can walk around in public and promise to be in cahoots and Bob Armstrong totally allows it. Cornette teases that he’s recruited a drill sergeant, Sgt. Rock, to run things in the Militia whenever he gets to be too busy, and Sgt. Rock will be debuting in SMW shortly.

TOMMY RICH (with General Jim Cornette) vs FLASH FLANAGAN
-Rematch from last week. Rich elbows Flanagan and Cornette celebrates like he’s already won. Enziguiri by Flanagan and he sprints up to the top rope, but crashes on the mat and Rich capitalizes with a suplex. DDT looks to finish, but Buddy Landell shows up wearing the stolen vest and tricks Rich into chasing him around the ring until Rich gets couned out, and Flanagan is now 2-0 on Tommy Rich. Cornette throws a funny tantrum after the bell.

-Bob Armstrong, still recovering from his injury from Terry Gordy’s piledriver, joins us by phone to announce that he’s drawn up some contracts for special matches, and Cornette has some very unpleasant surprises coming.

-Brad says he’ll never forget what Terry Gordy did to his dad, and he and the Wolfman will do something about it this at Halloween Scream.

COMET CHRIS MICHAELS vs TERRY GORDY (with General Jim Cornette)
-Cornette returns to the commentary table and says he’s already tired of being asked “Who is Sgt. Rock?” Gordy whips Michaels from corner to corner. Michaels surprises him with a bodypress for two. Thumb to the eye and a stungun by Gordy. Eye rake and a slam by Gordy. Clothesline, obvious edit, and then Gordy pinning Michaels for three. So something happened there. Gordy whips Michaels, but Wolfman runs in to try to make the save. Gordy starts whipping him and Brad Armstrong comes to the rescue to send Gordy and Cornette running. Michaels is being treated oddly, as they’re acting like they want him to be a star, while simply booking him as a jobber.

-Armstrong says there’s still time remaining in the show, so he’ll wrestle Gordy and defend the title right now if Gordy agrees to it.

SMW TITLE: BRAD ARMSTRONG (Champion, with Wolfman) vs TERRY GORDY (with Jim Cornette)
-Armstrong pounces right away and gets Gordy on the mat for a side headlock. Gordy tries to roll over for a series of two-counts. Back suplex by Gordy, and a fist drop for two. Gordy whips Armstrong to and fro. Right hands by Armstrong and Cornette trips him from the floor to block his comeback. Wolfman chases Cornette around the ring while Gordy suplexes Armstrong and WE’RE OUTTA TIME!

The Gibson/Thugs build was a high point among the odd booking choices and the rerun angles.
