Pro Wrestling Guerrilla ” Schadenfreude” Live Report 10.14.07
Pro Wrestling Guerrilla ” Schadenfreude”
Sunday October 14th, Burbank, CA. Start Time: 5:05
Approximate Attendence: 200 – 225
Surprisingly the show started on time, the doors were opened 15 mins before 5 and the bell sounded 5 minutes after. This could possibly be a new record for PWG. No announcements by Dino Winwood or Excalibur, no fan fare, just the first match of the evening.
1. Ronin Defeats Bino Gambino by pinfall via DVD
Match #29 in the series, I believe Ronin owns the advantage prior to this match. Decent match with no major blown spots and both men worked hard in the opener but the crowd heat wasn’t there as this match had no set up in the first place. As Bino was gaining momentum with a flurry of offense Ronin put him down with a flash DVD out of no where. *1/2
2. Scott Lost w/ Jade Chung Defeats Davey Richards by submission via Sharpshooter
Davey Richards requested to be announced as “Jade Chung’s future boyfriend” to a flurry of cheers and laughter from the crowd. That match was more or less set up at BoLA during the loser bracket’s tag match where Davey was constantly trying to hit on Jade and grope her at every opportunity leading to a “face pop” by the crowd and spurring on his “face turn”. Match started strong with a lot of technical moves traded back and forth. Davey dominating and Lost looking…lost in the ring. Eventually Jade comes into play and allows Lost to gain the advantage. It looked as if they sort of had some miscommunications in the ring during the middle that led to a few sloppy spots and a bit of a lag that lost the crowd heat from before. Plenty of stiff kicks by Davey and Lost working over Davey for the sharpshooter finish. Eventually Jade runs in and delivers a flying Ace Crusher to Davey followed by another Ace Crusher by Lost and Davey taps to the Sharpshooter. After the match Davey went ballistic and started beating down Lost and gave him an odd double under hook suplex. Jade then came to attend to Lost as Davey left. Decent match, but a bit of a let down from their first encounter due to a slow middle section. **1/2
3. Scorpio Sky & The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) Defeats Los Luchas (Phoenix Star & Zokre) and NEMESIS by pinfall via 450 splash by Slick Nick on Phoenix Star
All of the men involved here are local SoCal wrestlers with the Young Bucks being newly added to the roster. All of these men are very familiar with each other having wrestled each other dozens of times around SoCal and this match was what you’d expect from these men. Lot of high spots and a few spots were a little sloppy but not many at all. Almost a scramble match as the match went from tag team to lucha rules in the matter of 5 minutes. The action was non-stop as the final 3 minutes of the match was non-stop action dives, double teams, and finishers. Finish saw Phoenix Star fall to a top rope 450 splash from “Slick Nick”. Basically lucha, lucha, high spot, high spot, dive, double team, high spot, double team, dive, etc. the entire match, but it was entertaining as hell and was possibly the 3rd best match of the night and should solidify the Luchas and ‘Bucks in the tag division. ***

4. Human Tornado Defeats Chris Hero w/ Candice LaRae by pinfall via Jack Knife Roll-up with feet on the ropes
This match was set up at BoLA when Tornado tried to put Candice in a crossface crippler. *yes…he did go there* Hero came out to save Candice who is now apparently his valet. Right before the match started during intermission while everyone was filing in and sitting down Human Tornado came out of the back while Hero was at his table selling merchandise and attacked him. They brawled for a few minutes around the gym and finally after Hero got the better end threw Tornado into the ring to start the match. The match it self was fairly brutal as they brawled for the most part and even went into the fans at one point as Hero chopped Tornado who was set in front of a fan and fell back into the fan which caused a chair to collapse under them both. Fairly decent brawl but hardly a technical masterpiece. Finish saw Human Tornado give Hero a low blow with his head and roll him up with a jack knife pin with his feet on the turnbuckle. **1/2
5. Jack Evans Defeats El Generico by pinfall via 630 Splash
Very high flying and fast paced match which was dominated early by Jack. Of course the opening started with Jack showing off his breakin’ skills, to which of course Generico could not match. Good match which was what you would expect from these two with Generico playing the base to Jack’s high flying moves and eventually trying to ground him. Although 2 or 3 spots were a bit sloppy the match was good none the less and was much more back and forth than you’d expect considering Generico is a former PWG champ and current Tag Team champ. Both men bumped like pinfalls for each other and at one point Jack’s face bounced off the rope when his attempted rewind huracanrana was reversed into a kind of inverted face buster Alabama Slama. His face caught the ropes on the upswing. Jack kicked out of the Yakuza Kick/Half Nelson Suplex combo and managed to avoid the top rope brainbustaaaaah twice. Finish came when Jack hit the 630 splash on Generico after a 2nd attempt. Good match. ***1/2
6. Bryan Danielson Defeats Roderick Strong by submission via Triangle Choke
(Btw, good job on BoS as this was in fact a MOTYC for PWG)
People predicted this could be a “Match of the Year Candidate” and they were right. Perhaps not a run away candidate but easily in the Top 5 or 7 matches of the year thus far. Both men brutalized each other with American Dragon taking the early advantage and outwrestling Strong at every turn. Eventually this came down to Dragon working over each individual body part of Strong’s looking for an opening with the Cattle Mutiliation or various leg locks and Strong looking to work over the back for his Stronghold submission. Danielson brutalized Strong with kicks and Strong came back with brutal chops to Dragon’s chest, opening up a few blood blistered in the process as Strong hit nearly 4 dozen chops to Danielson at full power throughout the match. Danielson had Strong in the Cattle Mutilation 3 different times, went for the MMA elbows, and had several near falls. Strong hit several back breakers to Danielson and had him in the Stronghold twice but couldn’t seal the deal. The end of the match came when Danielson grabbed Strong’s hand and brutally stomped his head several times before applying a triangle choke as Strong tapped out. Great match from both men as expected from their RoH encounters and once again a strong MotyC for PWG. This is what will make this show a “Must Buy” come DVD time. ****1/4
