Rey Misterio Sr., Uncle of WWE’s Rey Mysterio, Passes Away at 66
AAA Lucha Libre has announced that Rey Misterio Sr., the uncle of WWE’s Rey Mysterio, has passed away at the age of 66.
His real name was Miguel Ángel López Días. He started in 1976 and retired in 2009. However, he did have one match in 2023 at a global Lucha Libre event, teaming with Aero Star and Mr. Iguana against Hereje, Hijo de Pirata Morgan & Nightmare Azteca. Mysterio gave WWE’s Rey his name, as he previously competed as Rey Mysterio Jr. Rey Jr. dropped the Jr when he got to WWE. Oddly enough, Mysterio Sr’s son is also as a wrestler and competes as El Hijo de Rey Misterio.
In addition to AAA, Misterio also competed in Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, WWA, WWO and Xtreme Latin American Wrestling. Like his uncle, he wrestled with a mask, until he lost it in a Mask vs. Mask match against Fishman on March 25, 1988. Outside of wrestling, he starred in the independent horror film Wrestlemaniac, as the titular killer, in 2006.
411 would like to give our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Misterio.
