Ahead of a huge matchup against Kenny Omega later tonight on AEW Dynamite, wrestler Rocky Romero spoke to Justin Barrasso with Undisputed to discuss the matchup and his career. Below are some highlights from Undisputed:
Rocky Romero on Wrestling Kenny Omega Again
“I have the chance to work with a lot of talented people. I never take that for granted. … The first time I wrestled Kenny was in Phoenix for Ring of Honor, and that was in 2010. Then we had the chance to wrestle again during the Best of Super Juniors [four years later] in New Japan.”
On How He’s Always Loved To Wrestle
“My job is always constantly evolving. One part that’s never changed is I’ve always loved to wrestle. Over the last two years, I’ve slowed down on the performing part. But I’m still a wrestler at heart. That’s why I got into this business. There is no greater high than to be out there wrestling in front of a crowd, especially in a match like tonight against Kenny. I’ve seen him grow from Ring of Honor and New Japan to where he is now, at the tip-top of the business, so wrestling him now means even more. We’ve been intertwined for so long. Some of the most pivotal years of our lives were spent together in the same company at the same time. And I got into wrestling by watching WCW on TNT and TBS. To be able to wrestle a high-profile top star on Dynamite, it’s a full circle moment.”
His Thoughts on Retirement
“If this were my last match, I’d be honored for it to happen against a guy like Kenny. I’m definitely slowing down, so it feels great to still have a moment like this. When I retire, I’ll stay involved in wrestling. I really debate how much longer I’ll be in the ring–I think about retirement all the time. There is a certain standard I want to always meet and exceed. The second that is no longer the case, then I’m done.”
Kenny Omega vs. Rocky Romero goes down later tonight on AEW Dynamite. Tonight’s show is being held at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park in Cedar Park, Texas. The show will air live on TBS starting at 8:00 pm ET.
