The Best Of The Rest 9.17.08: Volume 59 – Samoa Joe Vs. Sting

September 17, 2008 | Posted by Alex Mattis

Hello all and welcome back. First off, my apologies. I still haven’t got my thoughts and everything in line for my format change of this column. It’s coming soon though, so those of you who are interested… stay tuned. Now for the time being, wrestling history has presented itself and I have to cover it. Coming off of the less than impressive No Surrender PPV, and my topic of discussion last week of Mick Foley jumping to TNA it seems the company isn’t doing too much good… well at least in my eyes. Well I stand slightly corrected because Dixie & Co. have put together their biggest possible match for their biggest show of the year, and it’s got me as giddy as I get. Woo… sorry to fly off the handle like that. Finally we get Samoa Joe Vs. Sting!!! We’re getting it a bit late, but we’re still getting it damn it!!! Enough jibber-jabber, let’s get down to it!

Sting is an icon, plain and simple. He is one of the biggest professional wrestling stars that this country has even seen. I, along with plenty of others, put him in that upper elite “of all time” category. He has given so much to the business over the years and has given some of the most entertaining performances of any wrestler ever. He has proven that you don’t have to sell your soul to Vince to be recognized as one of the most important pro wrestlers in history. His run in TNA has turned out to be the most important addition to the roster and goes to show what kind of a guy Sting is. I’m sure that he isn’t desperate for a paycheck, he went to help the company out and he has done just that. He has helped their numbers and he has helped get their stars out there and over. Now it has come down to one of the bigger matches in his later career, and an excellent performance here could really further his legacy as one of the best ever. And if history is any indication Sting will come in with his A-game.

Samoa Joe is one of the most recognizable non-WWE wrestlers around these days. Since his arrival in TNA he has undoubtedly been one of the top players in the company and since winning the strap I believe he has become the face of the company. He has put up with the bullshit the company has thrown his way and just stuck his chin out, and gone out there are still performed to the best of his ability. With TNA getting a lot of negative attention from fans and wrestling critics alike this “WrestleMania” of a show is crucial, and with this enormous main event I don’t think Joe is going to waste the monstrous opportunity that is in front him. I would even go as far to say that this is the biggest match in the career of Samoa Joe and that he is going to make the most of it. Much like Sting, I expect Joe to bring his absolute best and go out there and try to give us something to remember.

The clash of these two stars is going to be something for the history books and will truly be the biggest match in the short history of TNA. Some could argue that the Joe-Angle match was bigger, but from where I’m sitting that match didn’t have the magnitude of this one. It’s not often a fan like myself gets this UBER stoked for a single match, but this one has got me pumped. I swear if TNA screws this one up it will be an unforgivable sin! But on the plus side, I don’t see how this one could be bad. I’m not sure how the rest of the card will turn out but I’m 99% sure this one will deliver. This is one of the biggest possible match ups that can happen in wrestling right now outside of the E and TNA is lucky to have it. While I highly question a lot of TNA’s actions, and think that this match is nearly two years over-due, come October 12th I’ll be glued to my TV.

Well, that it’s for me this week. Sorry for the delay on the change but change is coming!!!!
