Backstage Update on WWE’s Plans for the John Cena Classic

WWE has reportedly yet to zero in on the concept of the “John Cena Classic.” As noted, the 17-time WWE World Champion announced the “John Cena Classic” at the premium live event last weekend.
Just like last December’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, which featured Cena’s farewell bout, the event will pit main-roster superstars against NXT wrestlers. However, unlike the traditional format, where results of matches determine the winner, fan votes will decide the winner of the John Cena Classic Championship.
That said, it remains a work in progress, as WWE has yet to finalize the event’s format, Dave Meltzer reported on today’s Wrestling Observer Daily (via WrestlingNews.co).
Notably, Cena didn’t reveal the date and venue of the event during his announcement. Response to the concept has been mixed thus far. Many have cast doubts due to the popular vote overriding the result of matches as the ultimate yardstick. It’s also not yet clear if voting will be accessible to Club WWE subscribers or the general public.
Cena himself admitted on social media that the concept may end up being a “total failure.” He described it as a reflection of his beliefs and values. You can check out John Cena’s post here:
When asked to give advice, especially with WWE, I often reply
‘be authentic’
‘do not fear failure’
‘know your why.’
The John Cena Classic may not be perfect by any means yet it’s authentically me (I am not perfect either) and reflects my values and beliefs.
I’m aware that…— John Cena (@JohnCena) May 10, 2026
