We have to wait for two more weeks in North America, but Aquaman is already riding high internationally. The DC Extended Universe film is off to a stellar start in China with a $24.6 million opening day on Friday (RMB 169.5 million). That’s massively above the opening day grosses for the previous DCEU films. In fact, it is the best opening day in China for a Warner Bros. film and the best opening day ever for December in the country.

Deadline reports that the film is now expected to end the weekend in China at a potential $80 million or more. By comparison, the previous DCEU films opened in the country with the following:

* Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice: $55.7 million
* Justice League: $50.6 million
* Wonder Woman: $38.7 million
* Man of Steel: $25.9 million

Suicide Squad did not have a Chinese theatrical run due to its more supernatural elements.

In the US, the film is currently tracking for a $65 million-plus opening. It’s all encouraging news for Warner Bros. and DC Films, which needs a hit to put the franchise back on track after Justice League’s disappointing box office numbers.
