Apple TV+ officially announced that the critically acclaimed sci-fi television series, Murderbot, has landed a Season 2 renewal from the streamer ahead of the release of the show’s first season finale. The hit show stars Alexander Skarsgård, who also serves as executive producer, and is created by Chris and Paul Weitz. The first season finale debuts on Friday, July 11 on Apple TV+.

Co-creators Chris and Paul Weitz stated on the announcement via a press release, “We’re so grateful for the response that Murderbot has received, and delighted that we’re getting to go back to Martha Wells’s world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios, and the rest of the team.”

Apple TV+ Head of Programming Matt Cherniss added, “Chris, Paul, Alexander, and the entire ‘Murderbot’ team have delivered a brilliantly original, addictive, witty, and vibrant adaptation that has captured the imagination of audiences everywhere.” He continued, “We can’t wait to unveil what’s next for Murderbot and, of course, ‘Sanctuary Moon’ in season two.”

In the first season finale, Murderbot’s fate hangs in the balance, and at the Corporation Rim, PresAux presents a radical request. The sci-fi thriller/comedy series is based on the first novella in Martha Wells’ bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series. The show stars Skarsgård as Murderbot, who must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone and watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.

The first season also stars Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski. The series is produced by CBS Studios, with the Weitz brothers writing, directing, and executive producing the series under their Depth of Field banner. Andrew Miano also executive produces the show for Depth of Field. Additionally, David S. Goyer (Blade, The Dark Knight Trilogy) executive produces with Keith Levine for Phantom Four. Wells serves as consulting producer.

The first nine episodes of Murderbot Season 1 are available to stream now on Apple TV+.
