Kofi Kingston recently did an interview with Disco Inferno & Konnan. The interview featured a wide range of topics, including the origin of The New Day. Kofi, along with Xavier Woods & Big E, won multiple singles and tag team championships during the initial run of the group. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On Why The New Day Appealed To Wrestling Fans

“I think the most beautiful thing about the whole New Day story is that we could do it in a way that was like prototypical wrestler, right? You know, WWE Superstar, 6’3, 275 pounds, you talk like this and you’re really angry and you know, like…we’re not your prototypical wrestler and we’re into all sorts of things that regular people are into like video games, comic books, you know, anime, kung fu movies. And I think that when people saw us on TV they saw a lot of themselves in us. We came out with bright colors, unicorn horns, pitching ice cream, pancakes, twerking, Booty-O cereal, stuff that is stuff you would do with your boys, you know? For us to be on WWE breaking the mild in a way kind of that wasn’t stereotypical African American guy you would see as a wrestler, right?”

On The Early Days Of The New Day

“So it was crowds like Philly, crowds like Detroit. There were very specific times where…When we first wanted to be a group, we had gone to Vince and said “Hey, you know, we wanna be three guys that are really disgruntled with their jobs and they want to come together to be greater than the sum of their parts.” And Vince was like “Hey, that’s cool, but I’d have you be like preachers.” But we knew…all of sitting in that room and listening to him talk about how successful that gimmick was gonna be. We knew right away that like, nobody comes to a WWE show to go to church, you know? So they don’t want to be preached at, right? With the chemistry that we had, regardless of what he gave us to do, all we wanted was an opportunity to be on screen, you know? We knew that we would shine through…we wanted to be bad guys in the first place. So we came out and people were happy that we were doing something new, but very quickly they turned on us and telling us how much we suck, and we just loved that. That’s what we wanted in the first place, and it kind of worked out better because we weren’t your stereotypical bad guys and we weren’t angry.”

Kingston recently signed a new deal with WWE.
