Backstage Note on Original Plan for Kenny Omega vs. MJF

During last night’s AEW Dynamite, former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega accepted an offer from reigning champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF). Omega will receive a shot at the title at AEW Beach Break. However, if Omega loses, he will never be allowed to challenge for the AEW World Title again. Dave Meltzer provided more behind-the-scenes details regarding the matchup on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio (via F4WOnline.com).
According to Meltzer, the original plan was to hold Omega vs. MJF for the title as the main event at AEW Redemption later this month in Montreal. During the show, neither Meltzer nor Alvarez knew the reason why AEW and Tony Khan opted to make the change, but Alvarez said the decision was made “fairly recently.”
Meltzer also expressed confusion as to why the International Title bout with Konosuke Takeshita taking on Kyle Fletcher is happening on AEW Dynamite instead of the bigger pay-per-view event.
Whatever the reason, Kenny Omega vs. MJF for the AEW World Championship takes place at AEW Dynamite: Beach Break on Wednesday, July 8. The event will be held at The BayCare Sound in Clearwater, Florida. It will be broadcast live on TBS and simulcast on HBO Max.
