Q&A Session: Jon Jones Screws Up Again

Jon Jones

Hey gang, it’s time for a Q&A session. This time, you have questions about Jon Jones and I have answers that may or may not make sense. Let’s get to it.

Did we travel back in time?

No, we did not travel back in time. Jon Jones failed a drug test pertaining to a fight with Daniel Cormier in 2017.

Wouldn’t it be cooler if we traveled back in time?

Much cooler.

What does this mean for Jones’ legacy?

I think this is the thing that destroys Jones’ legacy. He already spent prime years of his career on the sidelines due to legal trouble and failed tests. Now he’ll be out of action for at least two years, possibly longer depending on a ruling. He could still return at 32 and dominate for a couple of years, but the damage is done. This comeback was his redemption. His chance to prove that all his demons were behind him and that he could move forward and be the greatest mixed martial artist of all-time. Now, he’s just the most talented fighter to throw it all away on multiple occasions.

What if he didn’t cheat?

Then he really needs better dick pills.

Now what?

Now Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson fight for the vacant interim undisputed unified double interim twice stripped once lost light heavyweight title.

The what?

It doesn’t matter. The belts are props.

How do you think Daniel Cormier feels?

He still lost the fight. Steroids don’t erase the visuals from that fight. He said he wanted to fight Jones at UFC 200 after Jones failed a drug test for steroids. Well, he got to fight roid Jones a year later. And he lost. I’m sure he feels some sort of vindication. Like everything he said about the guy turned out to be true. But he probably doesn’t feel all that great about the situation. In fact, he probably feels like he wasted years of his life chasing a guy who was willing to piss on everything he had to work for.

But he’s got to be pretty pissed, right?

I’m sure he will be on the inside, but what does being publicly pissed solve?

I don’t know, you tell me.

Fine. It solves nothing. Mark Hunt was pissed over Brock Lesnar failing a drug test and that led to him…still fighting in the UFC. Cormier being angry does nothing for him. People already hate him even though he was the good guy in his feud with Jones. If he gets angry, they’ll call him a crybaby who still lost and repost that Cormier crying meme. He spent years being pissed at Jon Jones because he knew they would fight again. They aren’t fighting again. By the time Jones is ready to fight again, Cormier will be 40 and hopefully retired. He’ll have made good money and he’ll have a nice UFC announcing gig. He’s a smart guy who is above the sport of MMA. There’s no sense in getting angry over something out of his control.

Did Floyd Mayweather do this to further tarnish MMA?

Yes. I’m 100 percent behind this theory. If Mayweather loses on Saturday, he can claim every great UFC fighter is on steroids (not that far from the truth, honestly) and ask people to wait until the drug tests come back.

Is this the worst week ever for UFC if Conor McGregor loses?

Long term, probably. The week that they had to cancel a pay-per-view was probably a worse week because of the immediate impact, but this impact will be felt for years. They’ve lost one of the few stars they have left in Jon Jones and they could lose their biggest star for the year if things don’t go so well for McGregor. Not to mention that it’s possible McGregor retires after this fight if he loses because he’ll be so paid that why bother fighting for millions less in a tougher sport?

Those guys that bought the company for $4 billion are having some serious buyer’s remorse right now. No Rousey, no Jones, no McGregor. If St-Pierre is one-and-done then they could be without a 500,000 buy pay-per-view for a long time.

So much for Jones-Lesnar, eh?

I had serious doubts of the fight happening in the first place, but I’d say it’s more likely now. It’ll just take place in a wrestling ring instead of an octagon.
