Daniel Cormier, Gina Rodriguez To Star In Series Adaptation Of MMA Film Warrior
A series adaptation of the 2011 MMA film Warrior is in the works starring former UFC star Daniel Cormier and Gina Rodriguez. Deadline reports that Lionsgate TV and Paramount+ are developing the series, which is based on the Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton as estranged brothers who enter an MMA tournament.
The series will be directed by Gavin O’Connor, who also co-wrote and directed the film. Cormier and Rodriguez (Annihilation) are in talks to play two of the four main fighters in the show, which will deviate from the gilm’s plot and will center on “the heart, desperation, and demons that compel fighters to excel in the cage.”
The series will be co-created with Adair Cole, who will executive produce and showrun alongside O’Connor. Paramount+ is now beginning work on treatment and script writing, with casting in progress for the other two lead roles as well as supporting characters.
Warrior was not a huge hit, grossing just $23.3 million, but it earned Nick Nolte an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
