Ella Jay Basco To Play Cassandra Cain In Birds of Prey

Variety reports that Ella Jay Basco will play Cassandra Cain in the upcoming DC Comics adaptation Birds of Prey. The film will be directed by Cathy Yan with a cast that includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ewan McGregor as Black Mask and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. Robbie will also produce with Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless. The film features Quinn, Huntress and Canary teaming up to protect Cain when she finds a diamond belonging to Black Mask. It arrives in theaters on February 7, 2020.

In the comics, Cain is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. She wasn’t allowed to talk or interact with other people as a child to condition her to become the world’s greatest assassin. Eventually she becomes friends with Bruce Wayne and becomes Batgirl. It’s unknown if she’ll take that role in the movie.
