Diana of Themyscira has had a lot of time in-universe since the events of her first film, and Gal Gadot says she’s grown up by the time of Wonder Woman 1984. Gadot spoke with Empire about the titular heroine’s growth since her World War I-set solo film debut and discussed how she’s learned to exist in the greater world.

“The first movie was a coming of age, it was Diana becoming Wonder Woman,” Gadot said. “She was very naive and she didn’t understand the complexities of life. A fish out of water. In this movie, that’s not the case whatsoever. Diana has evolved. She’s much more mature and very wise. However, she’s very lonely. She lost all of her team members and she’s guarded. And then something crazy happens.”

By “something crazy,” she means the return of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who sacrificed himself at the end of the first film. Gadot said she was ecstatic to work with him again, noting, “Chris was an integral part of the movie, and of its success, and because he and I and Patty really enjoyed working together, we all wanted to have him back. And Patty and [co-writer] Geoff Johns found the best way that serves the narrative to bring Steve back.”

The film was set to release on June 5th, but has been pushed back to August 14th due to the current pandemic. It stars Gadot, Pine, Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig, and will see Diana go up against Maxwell Lord (Pascal) and Barbara Minerva, aka The Cheetah (Wiig).
