Kenny Omega won the AEW World Championship on last week’s episode of AEW Dynamite and a new report has details on how long it was planned for. Omega defeated MJF on last Wednesday’s Beach Break episode of Dynamite to capture the championship for the second time. Had Omega lost, the stipulations dictated that he would never be able to challenge for the championship again.

Following the title win, there was some speculation online that AEW did the title change on TV in order to take focus from CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship win on WWE Raw. Fightful Select reports that sources “repeatedly” siad that this wasn’t the case. It was said earlier this month that Omega vs. MJF had been planned for “well over” three months, and sources confirmed that the title change had also been in the works for months. AEW had no notion of Omega being bound by the stipulation they had established that he would not be able to challenge for the title again.

The report goes on to note that the plan to have the match and title change on AEW TV was established before Sami Zayn even won the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions. Sources indicated that they were very pleased with the match in general, and specifically the viewership for last week’s Dynamite which reached a two-year high. (The rating was a three-week high.)

The report finally notes that, as some might have expected, the table bump in the match was an homage to Mankind’s WWF In Your House 14 spot where Undertaker hit him with the steel steps and sent him off the apron into a chair.
