Tromaville’s population just grew by one. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Kevin Bacon has joined the cast of The Toxic Avenger reboot, where he will play the film’s villain. It had been previously rumored that Elijah Wood would be in that role, but that is not the case.

The film is directed by Macon Blair from a script he wrote, based on the 1984 film from Troma Entertainment. It stars Peter Dinklage in the title role, as well as Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige. It begins filming later this month in Bulgaria.

Here’s a synopsis: Follows a struggling everyman who, when pushed into a vat of toxic waste, is transformed into a mutant freak who must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends, and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.

The story is pretty close to the original, although Toxie started out as a 98-pound weakling named Melvin and he didn’t have a son. The Toxic Avenger is Troma’s most recognizable character, appearing in four films and an animated series in the early 90s.
