Steven Soderbergh is at work on a new film that he calls a “philosophical sequel” to his 2011 pandemic thriller Contagion. Soderbergh’s thriller has made quite a comeback in 2020 due to the obvious situation of the world right now, and Soderbergh said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he’s developing a pseudo-follow up to the film.

“I’ve got a project in development that Scott Burns is working with me on, that’s a kind of philosophical sequel to Contagion, but in a different context,” Soderbergh said (per IndieWire). “You’ll look at the two of them as kind of paired, but they have very different hair colors. So, Scott and I were talking about, ‘So, what’s the next iteration of a Contagion-type story?’ So we have been working on that. We should probably hot-foot it a little bit.”

The original film was directed by Soderbergh from a script by Scott Z. Burns. Starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, and Jude Law, it was set during a pandemic and saw healthcare professionals, government officials and everyday people find trying to navigate the situation as a cure is sought.
