AEW is giving up its attempt to trademark the term Shockwave, which the NWA was in the process of disputing. As reported, the companies have been in dispute for some time over the name, which AEW attempted to trademark in September 2024. The NWA previously used the term for NWA Shockwave in December of 2020.
According to Wrestlenomics, AEW abandoned its trademark last week according to documents filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The abandonment was filed on November 13th and the trial and appeal board entered judgment on November 17th. The judgment was made with prejudice, meaning AEW cannot pursue the trademark in the future.
Tony Khan said in his interview with Ariel Helwani that he was “probably not” going to use Shockwave and had discussions with Billy Corgan about the name.
The NWA and AEW also both have National Championships. AEW’s was made official at Full Gear when Ricochet won the title. The NWA has reportedly told talent to tone down criticism of the AEW version.
