AJ Styles is baffled by Sami Zayn losing the Undisputed WWE Championship so quickly, but he’s willing to see how it plays out. Zayn lost the title to CM Punk on this week’s WWE Raw after just nine days, which has drawn strong reactions online. Styles, who previously said that he didn’t want to see Zayn become a transitional champion, weighed in on the matter on his Phenomenally Retro podcast.

Styles noted that he doesn’t understand but, put also said he hopes there’s a reason for this and a greater story at play. He laid out one potential direction he could see it go, and you can see highlights below:

“I don’t understand. And it’s not for me to understand, I get it. I didn’t write the show, I don’t know what’s happening. But I’m hoping there’s an actual reason. And from what I saw on the internet — you know, backstage with Sami after the match — he’s pretty pissed off. Let’s see where this story goes before we start getting mad about everything that’s going on. By the way, CM Punk looks like a million bucks right now.

“But you know, there is a story that’s happening. So, before we get our panties in a wad and just be as negative as we can be, let’s see what happens. Because this may be a transition in where Sami is a total different character, and that might be what we need. It might be another match to do.”
