Former wrestler Steve Regal (not to be confused with William Regal’s early persona) passed away on July 30. According to PWInsider, this was not known within the wrestling business, as people had been looking to book him for conventions very recently. Regal was known as “Mr. Electricity” during his career, which started in 1977 in Florida. Regal would bounce around several territories early in his career while gaining seasoning.

Steve Regal is most known for his time in the AWA in the mid-1980s. He defeated Buck Zumhofe for the AWA Light Heavyweight Championship on March 25, 1984 and held that title for 613 days until Zumhofe won it back. Regal was still the Light Heavyweight Champion when he teamed with “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin to defeat the Road Warriors for the AWA World Tag Team Championship on September 29, 1985. Regal & Garvin would lose the championship to Scott Hall & Curt Hennig on January 18, 1986.

After leaving the AWA, Regal went to Jim Crockett Promotions, where he would basically do the same things he did in the AWA. He teamed with Garvin on occasion, and defeated Denny Brown to win the NWA Junior Heavyweight Championship on August 2, 1986. Regal’s reign didn’t last long, as Brown won it back on September 1. Regal would leave for the WWF, where he fell into a role as enhancement talent.

Steve Regal made some appearances for the NWA & local indies until he retired in 1996. He was also the son-in-law of legendary wrestler, Wilbur Snyder. We would like to express our belated sympathies to his family & friends.
