While all signs point to WWE preparing another Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns WWE Championship match, it may not take place at WrestleMania 42. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the banter between Rhodes and Reigns at the end of Survivor Series: WarGames was intentional storytelling meant to hint at a future title showdown. However, ‘Mania plans remain open and could shift as creative discussions continue.
Dave Meltzer reports that WWE has internally locked in Rhodes vs. Reigns III for a future event, “although not necessarily at WrestleMania.” Several early scenarios for WrestleMania 42 are being explored, he said. One option reportedly features Reigns vs. CM Punk, with Rhodes potentially facing a different opponent. WWE is also considering Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker if Rollins recovers from his shoulder injury before the event, since Rollins has spoken about competing at WrestleMania in some capacity.
The report affirms that the WrestleMania card is far from finalized. WWE typically adjusts long-term plans based on injury timelines, live-crowd reactions, and strategic factors tied to broadcast partners. While Rhodes vs. Reigns III is set to happen at some point in 2026, “it’s too early to determine if it can happen” at ‘Mania. According to Meltzer, the match may be scheduled for another major show rather than WrestleMania.
"This is the last time we ever team. Just know that."
