Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Tama Tonga @ 11:05 via DQ [*] Firing squad can fuck right off, it takes a lot for me to hate a ZSJ match, but they did it.
Juice Robinson vs. Toru Yano: They lock up and work to the ropes for a break. We get some fair play as Robinson hits a shoulder tackle and jabs. They work to the floor as Robinson takes control. Yano whips him to the barricade and tapes him to it and attacks the injured hand with a chair. Robinson beats the count, but Yano attacks the hand. Yano grounds him but Robinson makes the ropes. Robinson fires up with jabs, and now unwraps his cast, Yano cuts him off but Juice hits pulp friction and finally wins one. Juice Robinson defeated Toru Yano @ 8:30 via pin [**½] An overall solid and entertaining match, a nice mix of comedy and accrual wrestling, with Juice finally getting on the board.
Kota Ibushi vs. Tomohiro Ishii: Buckle up kids. Ibushi beat Ishii in last year’s G1. Both men really need the win here. They waste no time as they immediately break down into a striking exchange. They light each other up until Ishii hits a big shoulder tackle. Ishii follows with head butts, and then lays in chops. He drops Ibushi with a huge forearm strike, they work up top and Ishii hits the dead lift superplex, Ibushi pops up and Ishii hits a German, but Ibushi pops back up again and he hits a German. Kamigoye is countered by Ishii, they trade strikes, and Ibushi hits a head kick and kamigoye for the win. Kota Ibushi defeated Tomohiro Ishii @ 16:13 via pin [****¾] This was an absolutely incredible battle, I had a feeling that we were in for an absolute banger here, and they didn’t let me down. This was just a raw battle of one upsmanship, with both men looking to survive the best their opponent had to offer, and then on top of that, they suckered me in even more as they started stealing each other’s shit and that pulled in the crowd even more, who were into this the entire time and really added to it with a great atmosphere. Ishii is a machine, constantly delivering, and not only is he a bad ass, but I say again, his selling is completely under rated. When Ibushi is on, there are very few that are better big match performers. Every time you thought they hit their peak, they somehow kept going, surpassed it, and it never overstayed its welcome. This was one of the best matches of the tournament with ease, and a top tier MOTY contender.
Tetsuya Naito vs. Hirooki Goto: They lock up, work to the ropes and start brawling. Naito dumps him to the floor and Goto back in and dumps him. Back in and Goto hits the shoulder tackle, and follows with clubbing rights. Goto grounds things and takes control. Naito to the apron, he fights off a suplex, and stuns Goto off of the ropes. The draping neck breaker follows and another neck breaker connects for 2. Goto fires back, Naito spits at him but Goto follows with a lariat in the corner. The spin kick and Saito suplex connect and Goto covers for 2. Naito fights off ushigoroshi, and follows with a neck breaker and dropkick. The corner dropkick combo follows, and Naito covers for 2. They work into a misdirection sequence and Goto hits a lariat and ushigoroshi for 2. Naito counters out of GTR, and hits a German. Naito follows with a flying forearm, but Goto counters destino into a reverse GTR. Goto fires up with kicks, Naito counters out of GTR and looks for destino, countered as Goto hits head butts. Naito counters GTR into destino for a near fall. Destino connects again and Naito wins. Tetsuya Naito defeated Hirooki Goto @ 12:38 via pin [***] This was a good and strongly worked match. There was nothing wrong with it technically, but it really lacked drama down the stretch and that extra gear you’d hope for, and felt a bit disappointing. Naito REALLY needs a viable alternate finisher as destino feels really bastardized these days to me. Naito picks up another title shot down the line with the win.
Kenny Omega vs. SANADA: This is a big match, not only for the tournament, but for SANADA who many are still not completely sold on. They lock up; Omega takes control and slaps SANADA around. Omega grounds things, keeping a slow pace early on. SANADA picks up the pace with some slick escapes, but Omega takes him back down. SANADA fights out, hits a shoulder tackle, and dumps Omega to the floor. He teases a dive, frustrating Omega. SANADA dickishly holds the ropes for Omega and back in Omega then attacks with a dropkick to the knee. Omega now lays in leg kicks and then avoids the standing moonsault. Omega continues to target the knee, and then work to the floor as Omega slams SANADA to the barricade and slams his knee off of the apron. Back in and Omega stays focused on the knee. SANADA slowly fires back, but Omega goes back to the knee. SANADA fires back and hits a missile dropkick. SANADA hits another dropkick and plancha to the floor, but is slow to follow up. Back in and Omega looks for you can’t escape but the moonsault eats knees. Omega rebounds with a RANA, SANADA rolls to the floor, and Omega hits the rise of the terminator tope. Back in and Omega hits kotaru crusher for 2. SANADA counters V trigger, they work into a series of counters, and SANADA flies into a powerbomb as he looked for the missile dropkick. He avoids the reverse RANA and hits the tiger suplex for 2. Omega fights off skull end, hits V trigger and Jay driller for good near fall. SANADA counters one winged angel into skull end, swings him around and Omega avoids the moonsault, lays in elbows but SANADA rolls back into skull end and drops down. Omega fights, starts to fade, SANADA releases, but the moonsault misses. They trade strikes, Omega fires up and so does SANADA. SANADA lays in big uppercuts, V trigger by Omega! SANADA gets skull end again, but Omega counters out and hits a cradled tombstone for 2. V trigger follows and the one winged angel is countered with a reverse RANA. Omega counters the TKO into a one winged angel and finally puts SANADA away. Kenny Omega defeated SANADA @ 20:15 via pin [****] This was an overall great main event, with SANADA delivering against Omega, and while he lost, came away looking great. The match was filled with good intensity, some great counter sequences, and a really well done closing stretch that made it believable that SANADA could walk away with a win.
