Well everyone it’s another Friday night and I ain’t got nobody, but I’ve got coverage of WWE Smackdown. Last week Drew McIntyre proved himself the next title challenger for WWE champion Cody Rhodes by kicking Cody’s head through part of the announce table so I’m sure we’ll get that match set up for the upcoming Clash in Paris card. Also on that card we’ll get John Cena and Logan Paul, so those two will likely be involved in some capacity. There’s some tag team action as well, DIY will take on the Street Profits and the odds of Candice LeRae and B-Fab getting involved are pretty high while Miz and Carmelo Hayes will take on Fraxiom. Miz and Hayes didn’t quite seem on the same page last week, Miz only recently returning from filming the new American Gladiators while Hayes has been left in limbo for quite some time. Michin looks like she’s next for Giulia and the women’s US title, Sami Zayn bounced back to Smackdown last week to pin Solo Sikoa so we’ll see if he turns that into some kind of US title program or if it was just a one off appearance. Either way we need something for Jacob Fatu to do, the Samoan Werewolf was absent last week and he’s one of the bright spots that Smackdown has to offer. Aleister Black and Damian Priest are still going at each other, Tiffany Stratton needs a new challenger as she feels like she’s just kind of treading water right now, and Alexa Bliss will take on Piper Niven to likely set up some kind of women’s tag team match with her and Charlotte Flair taking on the Secret Hervice. Smackdown has felt a little dull lately, hopefully tonight can get the trajectory back on track.
Commentary welcome us to Boston, Massachusetts for the episode. We see Drew McIntyre walk in the back while we get a recap of Drew kicking Cody’s head into the announce desk last week.
To the ring and here comes Solo Sikoa to make things worse. Solo’s got his Many Fallible Takes in tow. Mic time for Solo, he tells everyone there here for the benefit of the visually impaired I assume. Anyone who doesn’t like that they run Smackdown, well too bad. Last week Sami Zayn and so they showed up on RAW and stomped him out. They’ve stomped out all their opposition, which does bring out Sami Zayn. Sami heads to the apron and tells them to take it down a notch, he’s just here to talk. Solo says they can talk and gets his goons leave the ring as Sami enters. Sami is annoyed that they cost him his title shot, he was furious but also felt liberated. Solo doesn’t know what that means. Well Sami is free of the pressure he’d put on himself of becoming world champion, and now he can focus on other things that he’s set out to do. So thank you. Now Sami knows there’s so many other things he hasn’t done yet, he’s never been US champion and apart from a world title it’s the only one he’s never held in WWE. Solo says he wont hold it any time soon and says Sami doesn’t even go here so he can’t wrestle for this title. Sami says actually he is now back on Smackdown, Solo took something from Sami so now Sami will take the US title from him. That starts the predictable brawl, the numbers immediately overwhelming Sami. Jimmy Uso comes down to try and even the odds but Tala Tonga runs him over then Jacob Fatu comes down to actually equalize things. Fatu goes right after Solo then all three men team up to teal with Tala. Nick Aldis comes out and welcomes Sami to Smackdown and tonight Sami will be in the main event, a six man tag, any three of Solo’s goons against the three faces.
In the back Byron talks with Chelsea Green, Piper Niven, and Alba Fyre. Green says everyone knows how they got here, she broke up a silly celebration then took a funfetti cake to the face. Piper and Fyre promise to get the tag titles then head out.
Alexa Bliss heads to the ring with Charlotte Flair and we head to break.
Post break we get a recap of our opening segment and we know that Solo, Tala, and JC Mateo will be the heel team for our main event.
Piper Niven does get an entrance, good for her.
Match #1: Alexa Bliss w/ Charlotte Flair vs. Piper Niven w/ Chelsea Green and Alba Fyre
Bliss shows off her Lilly doll then Piper runs Bliss over. Cross chop from Piper then she tells the others to get the doll but Charlotte wanders over to guard the doll. In the ring Bliss lands some elbows then jumps for a sleeper but Piper breaks the grip and slings her over the top. Bliss runs into a Black Hole Slam and Piper taunts as we go picture in picture.
Some more general control work from Piper then a shoulder breaker connects for 2. Piper with some corner work then she tries the Michael Madsen dance from Reservoir Dogs before slapping Bliss. Bliss avoids a cannonball senton and both women are down as we come back to broadcast. Bliss with a striking flurry and a couple of rolling sentons then a low Blockbuster for a 2 count. Headbutt from Piper then a cannonball senton connects. Piper goes up for a Vader Bomb but Bliss avoids it then hits a DDT. Bliss goes up top, Green and Fyre look to get involved so Charlotte deals with Green. Piper then misses a corner charge and Bliss rolls her up for the 3 count.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Alexa Bliss won in 7:35
Rating: 2 stars
Thoughts: Decent little match but nothing really memorable, this was mostly about letting the heels get some heat in the post match beat down.
Post match Fyre superkicks Bliss so Charlotte runs in to deal with her and Green before Piper runs over Charlotte and hits a senton. Green then rams Charlotte into the ring post before tossing her into the time keepers area. Bliss is all alone in the ring to take a Gory Bomb then a Vader Bomb and the tag team champs are left laying.
In the back Jade Cargill and Tiffany Stratton are bickering by Nick Aldis, Nia Jax then comes over to want her umpteenth title shot. Tiffany is fine to fight any of them.
Miz and Carmelo Hayes head to the ring and we head to break.
We get a quick rundown for Triplemania 33 for tomorrow. It’s not a bad card.
Back to the ring and here come Fraxiom.
Match #2 – Tag Team Match: Fraxiom (Nathan Frazer and Axiom) vs. Miz and Carmelo Hayes
Axiom and Hayes start us off then Miz tags himself in. In the crowd we see Joe Gacy, that freaks Miz out. Miz and Axiom trade arm wringers and escapes as we also see Dexter Lumis in the crowd staring at Miz. Miz and Axiom get into a greco-roman knuckle lock, that runs through some of the usual lucha spots related to that tie up before Miz lands a kick and a top wrist takedown. The crowd want Hayes, that’s a first. Axiom escapes then Frazer blind tags and now Miz gets double teamed briefly. Frazer with some misdirection running then Miz just tags out. Hayes then runs into some arm drags. Frazer lands an enziguri then tags in Axiom so now Hayes takes some rapid fire offense. Miz catches some team work as well to set up the repeated suicide dives and send us to break.
Hayes is in control as we come back. Axiom fights back but takes a superkick, but then he counters a Tiger Driver with a Frankensteiner for a 2 count. Hayes then hits the Tiger Driver for a 2 count. Look Hayes, we get that you’ve seen some 90’s AJPW but knowing the moves isn’t the same as knowing when and how to use them. Both men tag out and Frazer gets to run wild on Miz including a Sling Blade. Superkick for Hayes then a running Shooting Star Press to Miz for 2. Frazer goes up for a Phoenix Splash but Miz avoids it and then knees Frazer in the head. Hayes tags in but he and Miz have some communication issues, ultimately Frazer hits a Spanish Fly from the second rope for a 2 count. Axiom tags back in, but Hayes avoids the Catapulta Infernal and fights back. Hayes climbs up, Axiom kicks him then Frazer tags in, Spanish Fly into the Phoenix Splash but Miz saves the match. The crowd think this is awesome, that’s generous. Hayes and Frazer go up top, they fight over position then Axiom comes over, Miz yanks Axiom down and DDTs him on the apron. That all allows Hayes to counter a superplex into an avalanche Black Crush. Hayes up top, but Miz tags in for the Skull Crushing Finale and the pin.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Miz and Carmelo Hayes won in 12:16
Rating: 2.5 stars
Thoughts: Some nice athleticism on display here, and the tag team scene on Smackdown is still fairly bright but Miz and Hayes don’t interest me against he Wyatts.
Hayes seems a little miffed by Miz in the aftermath but Miz wants to celebrate.
We get a recap of Drew kicking Cody into the announce desk. Drew will talk after this break.
After the break we find Tiffany walking in the back, she finds Kiana James. James offers her services as back up to support Tiffany. Tiffany declines the offer, but James warns her that being on the wrong side of Giulia could be bad. Tiffany walks off. Michin comes over and says she’s got next for Giulia, James dismisses her.
To the ring and here comes Drew McIntyre. Drew gets a mic and gets in the ring, he says people have been asking him why he did what he did last week. Well it was so violent they have to see it again, so here’s another replay. He did not attack Cody, he says our eyes are lying to us then asks for an update on Cody. There is no medical update. He asks if management could be hiding it since Drew hurt their golden boy. He doesn’t hate Cody, he feels sorry for him. Cody needs the validation from fans and management, and Drew used to be just like that about 5 years ago. He was in that spot, then evolved and realized that when a wrestler leaves they’re forgotten about. So now he needs to get his, and he’s earned a shot at the title. He wants it for himself, his family, and the paycheck. Cody needs the title because without it he’s nothing and he knows it. Last week he didn’t attack Cody, Cody attacked him. He then takes us point by point through what happened last week and makes the case for what he did being self defense. So he’s not the bad guy, but if provoked he will do very violent things. He calls himself the real nightmare to close. OK then.
In the back Byron talks with the Street Profits and B-Fab. Before they can answer a question Solo and company waddle over and Solo says they’ll be taking the tag team gold. Dawkins and Ford make fun of them a bit and remind everyone they still want the smoke. Tala gets distracted by something down the hallway behind them and we see Erick Rowan with his big hammer back there.
To the ring and here’s DIY and we get commercials.
Post break here come the Profits.
Match #3 – Tag Team Match: DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) w/ Candice LeRae vs. Street Profits (Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins) w/ B-Fab
26 minutes between matches. Ciampa and Ford start, Ford lands a dropkick then Ciampa lands a boot. Johnny tags in and Ford takes some corner work from both members of DIY. Some corner stomps from Johnny then Ciampa tags back in. Ford avoids a corner charge and tags in Dawkins. Dawkins unloads on Ciampa then drills Johnny with a Flapjack. Corner work from Dawkins, then Ciampa is able to misdirect Dawkins until he lands a knee strike to take over as we go picture in picture.
Johnny tags in and takes over in the ring. Dawkins remains isolated as DIY use some quick tags and a few short order bits of tandem offense. Some more corner work from Johnny then he cheap shots Ford as we come back to broadcast. Dawkins is able to counter a slingshot Spear and both men are down now. Both men tag out and Ford gets to be the proverbial house on fire. Clotheslines from Ford then a Fame-Asser to Johnny and neckbreaker to Ciampa. Standing moonsault to Ciampa as well for a 2 count. Dawkins tags in, but Ciampa fights for a bit before getting caught with the Pounce into back suplex and Johnny has to save the match. Ford kicks Johnny, then tags in as Ciampa is set for the Doomsday Blockbuster but Candice comes over and shoves B-Fab into the ring steps to complicate things. Ciampa with a knee to Ford then Johnny tags in for the superkick and Fairy Tale Ending but Dawkins saves the match. Everyone trades strikes now, then Johnny is shoved into Ciampa then Ford dives onto Ciampa. Johnny tries to dive but Ford counters him. Candice with a hurricanrana, slow motion there, but he ran into Dawkins. Back in the ring Johnny with One Final Beat for a near fall. Ciampa tags back in, B-Fab is back up and pump kicks Candice into next week while Dawkins disposes of Johnny. Ford with a jumping knee to Ciampa, then Dawkins withe a spinebuster and Ford follows From the Heavens so Dawkins can pin and win.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Street Profits won in 9:25
Rating: 3 stars
Thoughts: Pretty good stuff here, the Profits need some momentum and this might help but the whole tag team division has been carrying so much of the show the last few months it feels a little over exposed.
In the back Hayes finds Nick Aldis talking with the Machine Guns. Hayes wants a US title match but Miz interrupts things. Sabin and Shelley object to this and everyone trade some barbs and naturally this leads to Aldis making the tag match for next week.
We’ll get a recap of Cena and Logan Paul after this break.
Post break we do get the promised recap of Cena and Logan setting up their match for Paris.
In the back Byron talks with R-Truth, Truth feels good but over comes Aleister Black. Black asks if Truth is this excited for his other friend, Damian Priest. Truth asks how Black how he’s going to tell him who he is, and Black says he’ll see Mr. Killings next week. OK, they’re actually leaning into Truth having multiple personalities, that’s cool.
In the back Sami Zayn, Jimmy Uso, and Jacob Fatu get ready. Fatu doesn’t know Sami and was out there for Jimmy. Sami says he doesn’t really know Fatu either, but he’s cool with Jimmy so they should be good right? Fatu tells Jimmy to keep Sami out of his way.
Once again the Solo Squad head to the ring. They take up way too much time on any given episode. Anyway we head to break with our main event up next.
John Cena will be back next week in Dublin, Ireland. We’ll also get Truth vs. Black and the Guns against Hayes and Miz.
To the ring here come the good guys for the main event.
Match #4 – Trios Match: Sami Zayn, Jimmy Uso, and Jacob Fatu vs. Solo Sikoa, JC Mateo, and Tonga Loa w/ Tala Tonga
Jimmy and Mateo start, Mateo overpowers Jimmy early but Jimmy fights back with kicks. Sami tags in and goes after the arm of Mateo but Mateo runs him into the heel corner then Loa tags in. Loa, with his terrible punches, distract the ref so Solo can get a few cheap shots in. Sami gets tossed out of the ring and Tala lays in a running boot to send us to break.
Solo is working over Sami as we come back. Mateo tags in and they double headbutt Sami. Sami avoids a corner splash then Solo tags back in and cheap shots Jimmy to prevent the tag. Solo puts Sami up top but Sami fights back and hits a tornado DDT. Both men tag out and Fatu gets to run over Loa repeatedly. Senton from Fatu then a corner avalanche and a 10 headbutt sequence then a hip attack. Fatu clotheslines Mateo out of the ring then Jimmy dives onto him. Loa takes the pop up Samoan Drop for a 2 count. As Fatu goes up top Solo runs over but gets kicked off, though that allows Loa to get knees up to block a Swanton Bomb. Solo tags in, goes up and hits a Splash for a near fall. Needs to be said, Fatu has great near fall timing. Super kicks are traded then a double down spot. Sami climbs to the apron for the tag, Fatu sees it’s him but does make the tag. Blue Thunder Bomb to Solo and Mateo breaks up the pin. Everyone gets a moment to get a spot in, Fatu also superkicks Tala then dives onto him. Solo has a Spike blocked, then Sami hits him with a corner Exploder suplex. Sami lines up the Helluva Kick, it connects and that’ll do it.
OFFICIAL RESULT: Sami Zayn, Jimmy Uso, and Jacob Fatu won in 11:05
Rating: 2.5 stars
Thoughts: Pretty decent six man, despite my general dislike of Solo’s group the man himself has finally managed to get a little heat instead of just reflected heat. Sami being Solo’s kryptonite could make for a decent way to play his title program.
Post match Fatu considers Sami then they hug and the faces celebrate to close the show.
