A new report has some details on the original plans for the Women’s Tag Team Championship match at WrestleMania 42 before Nikki Bella’s injury. The Fatal Four-Way match took place on Saturday, with Paige coming out to replace an injured Nikki. The returning WWE star teamed up with Brie Bella and won the championships in a match that also included The Irresistible Forces, Alexa Bliss & Charlotte Flair, and Bayley & Lyra Valkyria.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the original plan was to have The Bella Twins win the titles in the match. Paige’s involvement didn’t ultimately change the finish of the bout.

Dave Meltzer noted that when WWE brought Brie back, the plan was to have them win the titles as Nikki had done her singles run. With Nikki under contract, the notion was they they would bring in Brie and have a nostalgia run with them as WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, a title that didn’t exist when they were in WWE previously. When Nikki went down to injury, Paige was “a good backup.”

Paige has reportedly signed a multi-year contract with WWE. As for Nikki, she revealed on Monday that she is expected to be out of action for six to eight weeks for the injury which was a tear, fracture, and sprain to her ankle. PWInsider reports that Bella underwent surgery on the ankle two weeks before WrestleMania.

On behalf of 411, our best wishes to Nikki Bella for a quick and full recovery.
