During a recent interview with ABC-7 KVIA ahead of last night’s AEW Dynamite in El Paso, Texas, former AEW Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa discussed returning to the ring recently after a long layoff. Rosa didn’t go into many details about her ailment, but he described her recent in-ring return as a “miracle.”
Rosa also spoke about how her doctors advised her to reconsider her in-ring career while she was out. Below are some highlights:
Thunder Rosa on What It’s Like Being Back and Her Return Being a Miracle
“Hard. Very hard. It was a miracle for me to come back, honestly. I suffered a lot of uh struggles during my time out, a lot of things that I didn’t share with the public, but I’ve been sharing this for a while. A lot of my doctors would tell me that I needed to reconsider my career, and the fact that I was able to recover and continue to fight, and now that I get another opportunity to go for a championship, it’s a blessing, and I’m really happy that I can do it. I did it first in Oceanside in front of my Papa Rosa, and my family were there, and now I get to wrestle here in Texas.”
On the History of Lucha Libre and Getting to Wrestle in Front of a Big Latino Crowd
“Well, first of all, exactly like there’s so much Lucha history here in El Paso and the fact that I get to wrestle a championship match, it’s even better. And like also like the way that I represent the culture is so much more different than a lot of my peers that are like also Mexicanos. I am very proud of being Mexican-American, but I like to celebrate like every aspect of femininity in a Latino woman, right? The hair — I didn’t — I’m not blonde anymore. I’m natural now. Like just embracing the beauty of being a natural, right? And being who I am and celebrating who, like you, see the picture in the back. What really a Latina, a Mexican migrant is here in the United States.”
Rosa on Latina Talent Rising Up the Cards in Wrestling and Newer Talents Like Persephone
“It’s about time. I mean, I think there’s a lot of Latina talent. I mean, we, off the air, we mentioned Persephone, who’s also signed with CMLL and is signed with AEW, a local here from El Paso, Texas, someone who was going with the name of Black Widow, which she actually wrestled for me a couple years ago when I had Mission Pro wrestling. She wrestled another talent, and I just see her grow and see how loved she is in Mexico. And now here with like some of the pay-per-views that she’s done and show her talent. She’s so talented, and then this is just the tip of the iceberg, and I’m excited to see where she’s going.:
During last night’s AEW Dynamite, Thunder Rosa failed to regain the AEW Women’s World Title. Thekla defeated Rosa to retain the belt.
