Triple H says the only person he ever injured with his famed sledgehammer was The Undertaker, having busted him open hardway at WrestleMania 27. The two faced off at the 2011 PPV in a No Holds Barred Match. During the bout, Triple H nailed Taker in the face with the sledgehammer. The Dead Man won the match but needed stitches afterward.
The WWE CCO discussed the story while giving a tour of the new WWE Headquarters to Complex. He noted that it was a gimmicked sledgehammer and that when he brought it down, the shaft went through the foam head. You can see highlights below:
Triple H on His Sledgehammer Usage:
“Yeah, you know, we [reacquired the original one] in one of the memorabilia shows. To be honest, I just used whatever hammer was available. I used it one time because they needed like — I end up smashing a coffin with it that Rock was in. And it just became synonymous with me after that. Sort of over the years used various ones. I did not like using — every now and then they’d have a prop one or something.”
On Busting Open Undertaker At WrestleMania 27:
“Ironically, the only time I ever injured anybody with the hammer was with Taker and they we were going to — I believe it was WrestleMania. He was going to put me up for Last Ride, and I was going to grab the hammer on the way up. But we were so afraid that, could I get all the way up there and still use it.
“So, we used a gimmick sledgehammer that had like a foam head. Because it was much lighter. And when I went up top and hit him in the head with it, I held on to the foam part to protect him. And this handle went all the way through the foam part and cut him from like here to here. I hit him, I had no idea, he went down. When I came up, he was bleeding. I was like, ‘Holy — what happened?’ You know, he was just covered.”
