It looks like Oscar-nominated director Denis Villeneuve is changing things up from author Frank Herbert and fashioning Dune: Part Three as his definitive ending for his take on the epic sci-fi saga. Warner Bros. Pictures debuted the official teaser trailer today for the upcoming sequel, which markets the movie as the conclusion of the franchise, stating, “Experience the epic conclusion of the Dune Trilogy.”

Granted, that could just be some creative marketing by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, who might attempt to get around that marketing by saying it’s the end of Paul Atreides story. Meanwhile, future installments could still technically adapt the other sequel novels written by Herbert, including Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune. However, that remains to be seen.

Based on the trailer, Dune: Part Three looks to be largely adapting elements from Dune: Messiah, the second installment of Herbert’s book series. Despite how Dune: Part Two ended, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his lover Chani (Zendaya) look to be back together, now expecting a child together.

While that is identical to a subplot in the novel, the ending of the last movie suggested that Villeneuve was taking the story in a new direction, based on Chani’s reaction to Paul arranging a political marriage to Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), and Paul also igniting a jihad against the entire universe to any sovereign planets or systems who plan on opposing his rule as the new emperor of the universe.

Dune: Part Three Marks the End of the Trilogy

Dune: Part Three showcases Paul now at the center of this new conflict, as he wages a deadly conflict across the cosmos. The trailer also features the first footage of Robert Pattinson, who portrays a Face Dancer of the Bene Tleilax named Scytale, the return of Jason Momoa, not as Duncan Idaho, but his ghola, a type of artificial clone, dubbed Hayt.

Anya Taylor-Joy also appears as Paul’s younger sister, Alia. Paul saw Alia in visions in Dune: Part Two, as she was still not yet born by the end of the movie, as the story’s timeline had been altered. Now, it looks like Alia will take a more active role in Part Three as she grows into her teen years.

Other returning cast members include Rebecca Ferguson as Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam. Other new cast members include Isaach De Bankolé, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, and Ida Brooke.

Regardless of the franchise’s direction, the Spice must flow, and Dune: Part Three hits theaters and IMAX on December 18.
