The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has its Fox McCloud. As noted, Universal Pictures, Nintendo, and Illumination announced this week that Fox McCloud of the iconic Star Fox video game series will appear in the upcoming movie. However, a voice actor was not revealed.

In a new video on Instagram, Illumination and actor Glen Powell (The Running Man, Top Gun: Maverick) announced that he is the new voice of ace Arwing pilot, Fox McCloud, in the upcoming animated movie. The video featured Powell jumping through a screening rom like Mario The Super Mario Bros. theme before he gets to the front of the room (see below).

The music then switches to the Star Fox theme, as Powell appears, wearing a Star Fox-inspired flight jacket and gear, and a subtitle reveals, Fox McCloud. So it’s now official that Powell joins Illumination and Nintendo’s animated movie universe as Fox McCloud, the leader of the Star Fox team.

The movie marks Fox’s big-screen debut. The character debuted in the original 1993 Star Fox video game released on the Super Nintendo. Since that time, Fox has appeared in various games and spin-offs over the years. He also crossed over with the Super Mario Bros. characters in the popular fighting game series, Super Smash Bros.

Glen Powell joins the cast alongside returning voice actors Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Donald Glover as Yoshi, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. New cast members include Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Luis Guzmán as Wart, and Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina.

The announcement of Fox appearing in the movie is likely good news for Star Fox fans, as the character has not appeared on game consoles since Star Fox Zero in 2016. Now, he’ll be appearing in a huge movie release, voiced by a big-name movie star.

The upcoming sequel is once again directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with a script by Matthew Fogel. It’s produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto.

The first movie in the franchise grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, and it will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures in theaters on April 1.
