Lucha Libra AAA: Undertaker’s Simple and Effective Booking is a Major Hit

With WrestleMania 42, we are now one year into AAA as a WWE-owned brand. A lot of people were worried that the WWE would change everything that made AAA unique and special. The fear would be that they would make AAA a WWE-lite product, replacing the trappings of lucha libre, with a sports Entertainment focus.

I think we can safely say they have not done that. AAA still feels like a lucha product; the high-flying acrobatic wrestling, the campy elements, and the unique characters and gimmicks are all still there. It just has better production behind it, and honestly, the booking is better than AAA has been in years. AAA was always mocked and looked at as second-rate compared to CMLL.

But now, not only has the in-ring product improved, so has the storytelling behind it. And one man is leading that storytelling, and I don’t think anyone ever thought that man would understand lucha as he does. That man, of course, is The Undertaker.

Solid Stories Leading to Satisfying Payoffs

One of the biggest feuds in AAA during 2025 was Dominik Mysterio vs El Hijo del Vikingo. Vikingo seemed to be the chosen star of the new era of AAA. He was front and center at the purchase announcement. He beat Alberto El Patrón (seriously, eff that guy) for the Mega Championship, and looked primed to carry the company. But the fans turned on him, feeling like he was being shoved into the spot instead of earning it.

So, gears shifted, and Dirty Dom was moved into the top position. And to Dom’s credit, he has knocked it out of the park. His run as Mega Champion is showing the world he has what it takes to be a World Champion in the WWE. The story between Dom and Vikingo has been very simple, but very effective. Vikingo was desperate to get the title back, turning rudo in the process.

His loss at Rey de Reyes means he can no longer challenge for the title while Dom is champion. And that is another example of Undertaker’s solid booking. He gets Vikingo out of the title picture, and he can rehab in the undercard while Dom moves on to his next challenger.

Americano vs Americano

Speaking of Dom’s next challenger, the booking behind the Americano’s has turned a comedy gimmick into one of the best stories in AAA. Before “Original” El Grande Americano was hurt, he was getting some cheers in Mexico, but was solidly a rudo. But the El Grande Americano, who took his place, has grown into one of the biggest tecnicos in AAA.

El Grande Americano II, alongside Rayo and Bravo, has taken AAA by storm. To the point that he is 2026’s Rey de Reyes. This is a credit to both the talent of Americano II, giving himself fully to the gimmick and using it to get himself more over than he ever has been. And to The Undertaker’s booking abilities, making sure not to push him too fast, and letting the fans’ love grow organically.

Bookers tend to fall into the trap of either too much too soon or waiting until someone is past their peak to really get behind them. With El Grande Americano II, Undertaker has ridden the sweet spot. Giving him a steady push, while not rushing it. This has helped make their upcoming Luchas de Apuestas match as big a deal as most anything from this last weekend.

Think about that, a throw-away comedy gimmick, that started as an American pretending to be a lucha star, that morphed into an Austrian pretending to be an American pretending to be a lucha star. Has become one of the hottest feuds in wrestling. That takes some serious talent. Both from the wrestlers involved and the booker behind it.

Building a Roster

Undertaker was given a roster of talent that most of the world didn’t know. He has done a lot of work to showcase the current stars and the wrestlers who are marked for future success. He has smartly used established WWE wrestlers to help bolster the roster and to put over the AAA talent.

Mr. Iguana, La Parka, Vikingo, and El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr have all been showcased on NXT and the main roster. Dominik, being the Mega Champion, reminds everyone tuning into Raw about AAA. Both Americanos being on Raw has helped to sell their story and get people to tune into AAA Worldwide to see it unfold further.

Nattie, Lola Vice, and Bayley have all been involved in the Reina de Reinas division. And speaking of Vice, she is also one-half of the AAA Mixed Tag Team Champions with Mr. Iguana.

The Best Hour of Wrestling on TV

Undertaker and his team of Jeremy Borash and Pete Dunne have lowkey given us the best hour of wrestling on TV every week. It’s a quick and easy show to watch. With it only being an hour, there isn’t time for fluff. You just get some exciting in-ring action and good segments to build feuds and storylines. If you aren’t watching every week, find some time to do so. You can thank me later.
