Malakai Black Reportedly Granted Conditional Release From AEW
– Fightful Select reports that wrestler Malakai Black has been granted his conditional release from All Elite Wrestling (AEW). It was recently rumored that Black had requested his release from AEW for personal reasons.
Black’s initial request for release was not granted. Previously, AEW told Fightful on the record that Black was not gone from the company, but it appears that AEW has changed its initial stance now that Black has been granted his release. Several talents stated that Black is done with AEW for the foreseeable future, with many of them saying he was granted his release. His release is said to be “highly conditional,” which normally isn’t the case for AEW, who normally has not released talent for reasons other than disciplinary issues. Requests for release are reportedly done on a case-by-case basis.
Company President & CEO Tony Khan is said to have wanted to keep Black in AEW and wanted him to be a part of the brand “for years to come.” Khan reportedly attempted to have conversations with Black to salvage their working relationship that AEW thought were fruitful. However, after a meeting took place, AEW officials decided that if Black wanted to leave, it would be best if the company allowed it.
With regards to the conditions of Black’s release, AEW talents believe that AEW has placed heavy restrictions to grant Black’s release. These likely include restrictions for Black to wrestle elsewhere in the immediate future.
Additionally, Black is said to have canceled an indie wrestling show date scheduled for September 9 in Ohio. AEW sources also said they’ve heard that the door is not closed for a potential return for Black to AEW.
Malakai Black competed in a six-man tag team match at AEW All Out last Sunday. He and other House of Black members Brody King and Buddy Matthews lost to the team of Darby Allin, Miro, and Sting after Allin pinned Black. After the match, fans noticed him embracing the other House of Black members on stage, blowing a kiss goodbye to the audience, and taking a bow, like a curtain call.
